He took the lid off and set it on the inside of the fender well , some place like that... it fell off into the road somewhere along where you drove after that....
but the idea of not just fixing the situation by replacing it..
even if he was not at fault ( really zero percent possible ) he would have been smart to replace it in a friendly manner....
no customer service training...

I'm going to enroll in night or summer classes for basic mechanic training as soon as I can. I've been planning to for years. I've always had good luck with mechanics; I only went to this shop because they were recommended and within walking distance of the house. Easy drop off.

Sweet Jesus! What an infuriating mistake.

All my other mechanics have been wonderful and willing to share their knowledge and have liked that I enjoy learning about my cars and researching them, even if I'm not confident doing work on them myself with no training or background in it. This guy... what a piece of work.

Often local community colleges have short or long courses on auto mechanicing...
My high school had an auto mechanics course and I took it. We never saw an automobile.. all theory from the book... but very useful information for a base to use when dealing with a car... I have run across mechanics who never took any lessons.. and could not tell you what order the four stroke cycle happens in... lol
I suggest that prior to taking one of those you find the teacher and determine what text book/s he/she will be using... and that you read those before showing up ...it will be a lot more fun for you...and everyone will be impressed.... with the quality of any questions you may need to ask.

This may sound funny... but if that local school as a good reputation with regards to their ' small engine repair ' class... really good background for future reference.

Thanks for the tip! That's a great idea. I'm going to see about how to get into some night classes in the next year. It will be good for me to meet some people where I'm moving to as well. Thanks again for the tip!

How do you not check the reservoir if your doing brakes ? All vehicles have a reservoir large enough to keep the system charged with fluid to the point the pads/shoes need replacing.

Sometimes the Low Brake Fluid light comes on at this point or slightly earlier and folk often top off the reservoir, but come brake replacement time, there will be too much fluid just to push back the caliper pistons to install the pads and fluid pushed back will over spill.....however:

Any tech' will or should, clamp off the brake hose on the wheel they are working on and bleed off the old fluid out of the bleeder to stop contaminated fluid being pushed back through the system.....especially an ABS equipped brake system..

There is no way I know of to fill a brake system from the calipers or pistons where you would not need to know how much fluid is in the reservoir.

Oh, wait a minute. with a pressure vessel you could fill the system from the bleeder and fill until the Low Brake Fluid light goes out ..? This is what he must have done.

So...lets know who this tech is and why you should not allow him to work on your brakes.

Did I just make sense ?

IF it were possible to do it from the bottom....
it would put a huge amount of brake fluid out into the engine compartment at the brake reservoir ...
and all sorts of paint would be peeling off now...

If you have another person there at the time... just have them do the brake pedal pressing....like the old days.... If there is another person there maybe they could help him open the hood enough to act like a rational person... lol

If he's trying to save time by not opening the hood...Nah...he'll be charging labor for three tech's.

Let's see. He inflates your tires by blowing air in through the bead so he don't have to remove the valve stem cap. or...maybe he fills washer fluid tank through the jets ?
If he's that wiered how does he fuel up ?

Amazing ability to lie. Good you flamed him on yelp. He deserves to be unemployed, or on an assembly line where a line boss can watch him.

He inherited his dad's business and works alone from what I've seen. Everyone makes mistakes, but most of us have the good sense and courtesy to fess up and make things right when we've made a mistake. This guy...
