Where is my transmission serial number?

Hello all,

My transmission serial number appears to be missing. I can only 4 numbers, 1232

It's a 1978 300d. Is it located somewhere else beside the passenger side lip above the pan?

It appears that the numbers were machined off, and that there is a large crack in the case (I am sure you are aware of both these observations). If I were to hazard a guess, it would be a 722.1XX (18?). I believe stretch is the expert in this area, and he would have a better idea of what it is.

Yea I've noticed the crack before when cleaning the transmission when I first got the car. No leaks and it shifts great, I guess I'll keep driving it.

Why on earth would someone machine off the serial number? Could it be a reman?
