Secret identity

My W123 has been down for a few months now, transmission will not fully engage in forward gear unless given a push. But that is not what this is about.

Now that I have time to actually do some investigating, i've been trying to make sure I am using the correct trouble shooting procedures. So I've been looking into how to identify my transmission. Diesel Giant has a description and pictures. Problem #1, the original numbers for my trans have been ground off by the MFGR. Instead of having the numbers punched into the casing, there is a plate on the front. Reads:

ORIGINAL MERCEDES
Tauschaggregat (Exchange Unit)
(Part number) 123 270 3701
serial number ....

What transmission do I have?

Also, the engine numbers are missing. The 617 are stamped clearly, but the rest of the stamping are is bare. I wire brushed it, and it does not look as if there were ever other numbers there.

This is an absolute guess that's based on experience in dealerships of US cars. The funny numbers might be telling you that the engine and maybe the trans are factory replacements under warranty. It's not unusal for US makers to have the dealer install a warranty engine with odd number stampings with the idea of keeping the replacement engine generic - maybe it'll go in a car, maybe in a boat, maybe behind a manual or an automatic trans.

Like I said, just a guess as I have zero knowledge of Mercedes' protocol.

Are the 722.303 and .31 are close enough to interchange? What are the issues and complication which replacing one with the other bring?
