just leave it be, the engine's happy burning it.
If it's ridiculously excessive (like oil cap flying sky high from blow by) then you have other worries than a bit of oil in the intake tracts. make sure your valves are properly adjusted and keep on motoring.

Ah, you think it's blowby. Do you notice oil anywhere around the engine? Valve cover gasket? Oil pan gasket? Front main? If so, fix those and your "blowby" will be dramatically reduced. Each of leak is an air pathway that's less restrictive than the air filter. Air is drawn through the engine, and picks up oil along the way.

Welcome to the Forum.
You do have an oil separator inside the Air Filter housing. Pull the lid and you will see a small round black assy. Blow By vapors enter it, it`s suppose to collect the oil and it drains down a tube under the Filter Housing and back into the pan. It also has a black tube that points down the intake for suction, and burns the oil vapors that don`t condense. All engines have Blow By, just a by product of compression and combustion. The higher the mileage, the more you will have. and it is also the condition of the engine, how it was taken care of before you got it. You didn`t mention how many miles is on the engine or your oil useage. My 80 240D uses a qt some where between 1200 and 1500 miles depending how I drive her. Iam almost to 389K. Charlie

take off the manifold, soak it in diesel overnite, take it to the carwash and blast it out, use some old wire tube cleaners bent around to elbows to scrub where the spray stream wont reach...
( the 83 up are easier because you can spray right into the egr port in front and get a straight shot at all the gunk ) |

There are a few things to check.
O-rings on the bottom of the oil separator. (under the air filter housing) Seal around the top of the oil separator. Oil filler cap. (is there a lot of oil escaping pass the seal) |

I have not read all of the responses but some people have added a remote oil separator/canister.
You can buy them or make them. On my 300D the Oil Vapor was saturating the stock Air filter shortening the life of the Air Filter. I had enough room in the 300D to modify the Air Inlet and I put the Blow by tube between the Air Filter and the turbo charger. That way the Blow By Oil Vapor did not get on the Filter element. Below is what I did. I also made a different Oil vapor separator. Washable Air Filter and Intake Mod , With Larger Breather

The stock separator is known to rattle loose and become useless... pry the tabs up pull the top off and clean it well. Put a bit of stainless steel scrubby in the bottom and reassemble it with ultra black rtv...

I seem to recall modifying my separator many years ago by removing the top cover, installing a length of radiator hose on the round protrusion on the bottom of the cover, long enough almost to reach the bottom of the canister, and filling the annuus between the hose and the wall of the canister with stainless steel wool(pot scrubber). Seal the top of the canister with silicone.
This forces the vapors to pass through the ss wool and allow the oil vapor and droplets to coalesce on the wool to form large enough drops to flow by gravity to the bottom and drain into the oil pan. The fsm I recall refers to the separator as "cyclonic" which I think is at best a pipe dream. With the modification, I have a dry air filter housing and turbo inlet. Before that both were an oily mess. Peter |
