I don't think the power windows have a relay, just a fused wire to the switches. Brown wires don't need to be fixed since they ground anyway. Several ways to fix other wires, once the short is fixed. You could wrap w/ self-fusing silicone tape (Ace Hardware, ...), regular electrical tape (worse), or remove pin from connector and slide PVC tube or heat-shrink tube over the wire. Of course you could replace the wire. For small areas of exposed copper, can use "liquid electrical tape".

Hmm. If the windows don't have a relay, I wonder what I was removing. It is behind the cluster right in the middle, small cube relay. Part number is 001-542-0219

Check the wiring diagram for your year. I kind of recall a relay-looking thing there (near brown wire gnd pt behind cluster) in my 1984 & 85 300D. Might be the turn signal flasher.

Your Flasher is between the Ash Tray and Shifter under the wood Shroud.

This one? I lost it all

I lost it all....electrical fire high up in the dash

So I'm confused because I have seen threads here discussing replacing the power window relay when they stop working. Not sure what else to do. But I guess I have bigger problems now anyhow.

Okay I'm back in town and it's time to deal. Looks like I might have dodged a bullet with the wiring. Seems like it really just fried the ground wire from this relay.

Now there seem to be 4 wires for this 5-pin relay. Anyone know how I can figure out which ones go where?

Here are a few images from different threads saying that this relay is for power windows.

Yes, there is a power window relay. Its coil is fed by fuse 12 (hot in run or start). Unfused power goes to the relay contacts which powers Fuses a, b.

Is there a way to tell which color wire goes where? I've been searching for a wiring diagram but haven't had muck luck. I don't think I'd understand it even if I found one!

There's a red wire, a black wire, a ground wire and a red with blue stripe. Any advice appreciated!

Once I get this sorted, I think I'll be ready to start the car and move on to the vacuum problems...

okay, so if i can trace the wires to the fuses, find which is 12 and 2, then that should help me figure out which contacts on the relay i should attach them to?
