Good advice above. Let me clarify.
The post 1 question assumptions are wrong. The compressor is not actuated directly off the thumbwheel. That is simply an "electronic request signal" to the climate regulator box. All current that drives the AC compressor clutch comes from a relay. The relay is mounted in the engine bay, driver's side under a plastic cover on top of the inner fender. Your 1983 has 2 relays there, the other one drives the radiator electric fan. Those w/ 1985 cars have just the fan relay there, w/ the Klima box actuating the AC clutch. Remove the relay and jumper from pins "30" to "87" w/ a 12 awg wire. That will power the circuit directly, just like the relay does. You should see pin numbers on the bottom of the relay, and be careful to match to the socket holes, and label w/ a Sharpie. Don't connect "30" (12 V supply) to gnd (85 or 86, forgot) or you will get a big spark and blow a fuse or worse. Sorry, I forgot which relay is which, but you will know when the fan turns on, then label them. Keep the wire under the cover for on-road emergency repairs. BTW, people often need to jumper the AC clutch on when filling w/ refrigerant if the 1st can doesn't build enough pressure to turn on the "low pressure" switch (requires ~15 psig). The uV dye is not a factory feature. That is just something commonly added to help find leaks. It often comes in "oil charge" cans, or in compressor oil (most PAO 68 bottles have it). People here are guessing a tech might have added it in the past.

Thanks Bill!
I'll need to be very careful as I read elsewhere of destroyed wire harnesses & car fires caused by incorrect jumpering ... Are these the two relays to which you refer, please? |
