Transmission Pro needed.

I have taken the engine/transmission from my 85 SE and wonder if I should save the 722.31 transmission in case the one in my 84 SD gives me problems.

Will the 722.31 work in place of the 722.303?

Doubt it, I would lay money the bell housing pattern is different.

Will the .31 fit any other V8 cars?

According to what I'm reading the 722.3XX was used in all 1981-1985 126 models. My data source does not list what the 'XX,' is applicable to.

No Sir, I will not bet against you on this.

The bell housing patterns between the diesels and gassers is indeed different.

While the statement above is true as far as it goes, the difference between the two bell housings is the difference between V-8 engines (all gassers), and inline engines (which include both gasoline and diesel engines).

To address the OP's question, the V-8 trans could be kept as a source of internal parts. And yes, that trans is a direct bolt-on to all aluminum block M116/117 engines, and can be adapted to the iron block versions of same.

84 was a 1 yr only specific tranz for the SD, I don't remember what the difference was but I sold one yrs ago to someone in San Diago.

Thanks, panZZer. That's just what I needed to know. I'll take this opportunity to tear into an automatic, I've never done that before.

It looks as if I'm going to scrap the 117 engine and sell the heads at aluminum price so I'll probably put the trannsmission housing on the scales at that time.

It's a shame, I've had no interest in the engine or transmission. I'm in Gville, SC if anyone wants either of them cheap.
