+1 rack position sensor. The leak is engine oil, Nowhere near enough to explain your problem. If its caused by a leak, it will be air leakage into the fuel system. Consider replacing the o rings in the fuel heater and put it back in service. Constant fuel temperature helps stabilize the idle.

Gotcha. This is me being a MB diesel noob, but I thought the heater was only beneficial in cooler weather?

fuel heater is not needed, mine idles fine and has been missing for years, oh and it idles even smoother on wvo.

How does the engine run under load going down the road, do u feel any shake like a misfire?? If so, crack injectors one at a time to see if its 1 cylinder.

U should fix any fuel leaks before doing any further diagnostics too, to rule that out. also yes injectors should be pop tested and pressure balanced.

How many miles on engine??

Engine is fine under load. I don't have access to a pop tester. There are 225,000 miles on the engine.

So...the injector halves weren't torqued properly. They are fixed now. However, in the process of removing, I broke a return nipple off one of the injectors!!! Anybody know if I can get those nipples anywhere?

Without a pop tester you need another entire injector.

So...I got everything buttoned up. No more visible leaks. She runs great! Occasional drop in idle to a slow stumble. I'm thinking the delivery valves probably need to be rehabbed. That's next on the list.

Update: it's back. I do have something to add, though. I did a diesel purge and it ran great while it was running on straight DP. Just like a sewing machine! But now that she's running on regular diesel again, I have that "miss" again. The main culprit seems to be cylinder one. Are there any further diagnostics I should consider?

if it runs well on the diesel purge setup it would seem to indicate that there is a blockage or an air leak somewhere in the fuel plumbing that was disconnected for the DP.

-I agree with phillytwotank.

-there is a suction stainer in bottom of fuel tank. it may be plugged up. its probably never been cleaned or replaced, it should be inspected. i will try to attach a parts image from epc.

-make sure rubber lines are in good condition in engine bay from fuel feed lines to engine. if there origional they need to be repalced there old.

-make sure rubber lines under car from lines to tank strainer are in good condition too. if there origional too they need to be repalced.

-if youve repalced the rubber lines or some one else in past, make sure there are no kinks. Also make sure the rubber lines that were used are compatible with diesel and biodiesel. the cheap cheap fuel hose from parts store is not. use bio deisel safe hose. It could be getting soft and sucking shut too if ur tank strainer is plugged up.

-Also hook ur diesel purge up like u were and run it on a can of clean diesel to verfy is ur low side fuel system from tank is the problem.

see attached image. number 23 is the strainer.

See this link ALSO. Link wont hyperlink for some reson. add mercedes source in astrics. https://**************.com/store/123-116-126-201-124-140-210-diesel-fuel-tank-filter-screen-new-seal

One of the first things I did when I got the car was to change out the return lines and clean the fuel tank screen. I also ran two bottles of power service diesel clean there's a tank. Not at the same time, of course! I'm thinking that I may have loosened prechamber a little bit when I changed out the injector nozzles. I'll have to get the tool and tore down the prechamber to spec. The only cylinder that is suspect, is number five. When I crack the fuel line to that injector the idol changes. But not on any of the other ones.

I know this is from last year, but I found my problem...the ELR solenoid on the back of the IP was all kinds of gunked up. I pulled the one off my parts care and she idles fine now. Well...she idles fine when she's warm. Now it's time for glow plugs and carbon reaming!
