The bent axle should be fixed, but it doesn't explain why the right wheel is located so far forward. That can only happen as the result of an accident. The rear axle assembly mounts to a subframe, which is mounted to the body with only four bolts. My best guess is that the four mount points have been "relocated" as the result of a hard hit. Post some photos of the right axle area with the wheel removed, so that the "bones" are visible. Have you tried to have this aligned?

am familiar with the W123 rear suspension, the W201 is a bit more complicated with
the additional link arms.

You definately have something bent, I doubt it is the axle.

Here is a thread showing exactly what your rear suspension looks like.

Here is the Google search I did. Each picture is a web site, just click on them.

And yet the right side is displaced forward. If the subframe isn't displaced, bent or otherwise damaged, the only other possibility is that both thrust links and the toe link are bent, which still suggests significant accident damage. Assume that what you've been told is wrong, or that the repair was done poorly. Anything is fixable, but you need to figure out what the problem is. Post those photos.

The subframe is fairly easy to drop...

You might want to source a replacement one and swap it in.

If he was in a bad enough hit, is it possible that not only the subframe is bent, but also the s/f mounting points on the body have been torqued/displaced from their proper locations? In that case, another sub frame may not solve all of his problem...

The toe is adjustable on these cars but the wheel looks pretty straight. I agree, lets get some pictures of the links and subframe. Something is bent. The 201 rear end is fairly easy to remove (unless one of the subframe bushings is twisted) so I agree with the above, may just be best to replace the subframe.

Before thinking body or subframe I'd be looking at the rest of the rear suspension - there are several parts that are more likely to have been bent

Depending on the level of accident damage sustained it may have required some sort of certificate for road worthiness.

I would try either the previous owner or the repair shop if you know who they are, in the meantime I wouldn't drive it until declared safe.

Can you look up the cars insurance history?

For example, the UK has a database of vehicles damaged/repaired together with an appropriate classification

Your other steering related issue could be linked?

That chassis / body damage could be it (3rd video)

The spring carrier / support looks suspect too
