Can I remove rear cover from iron box 4 speed?
Howdy, I am just getting back to working on my project car. Life got in the way for a bit but I am back at it.
I bought an iron box 4 speed from a 240d, and the ham fisted mechanic before me managed to break off the tab on the rear of the trans where the speedometer connects. I would like to use my speedometer so I need to get this repaired. I still have the broken tab and bolt, and the piece fits perfect like a puzzle piece. I am looking to find out if I can remove just the rear cover of the trans where the break is, or if I have to take apart the whole trans. I do have a new gasket/seal kit for the trans. Should I just bite the bullet and pull the whole thing apart? I have some experience with gearboxes in machines (I'm a machinist) but not so much with cars. I was hoping to find someone that has had one of these apart. Thanks! |

Well this link should give you an exploded view of that transmission. Might be just what you are looking for.

The rear cover is removed by first removing the nut (staked to shaft) which retains the three-legged output flange. Then pull off output flange. Then remove screws holding cover to main case, and remove cover. |

Thank you both Jim and Frank. I went ahead and dug in. Months ago I made this socket to get the nut on the rear shaft off, and it worked well. If anyone needs one, I'd be happy to lend it out.
It was much more simple than I had imagined. Take off the bolts, pop the cover loose. Here is a pic of the broken tab. Here is what is under the cover, not black magic. Inside of cover, old gasket still in place. There is a small shaft that holds that gear in place(upper right) that needed to be pressed out. And a small seal that seals the shaft from leaking. I could just barely grab this since the tab was broken and made some room. This would be a pain to remove without that break. Also a seal that I will replace, that came in the kit. I will probably end up pulling the front cover as well, since there is a seal in there as well. |
