I'm with you, Rich. If I can get them 85% of the way there I call it good. My first gig (well, second depending on how you count) in the automotive world was doing used car cleanup so I guess I lost my taste for detailing.

I heard back from my friend, and he wrote this:

"The secret is that I just spend tons of hours removing and polishing nearly everything, as you know.

I remove all the carpet and seats then remove the seat covers and scrub them with a brush and diluted simple green then rinse, and hang them up on my fence to dry. Then re-install all the same, but cleaned up, materials back in the car, so it all looks like new but did not install any repro, or new pieces.

It takes forever, but I like the preservation aspect of it and I get to learn quite a bit of how these cars were assembled and the differences in the models"

Beautiful work. It's very time-consuming work but ultimately worth it if resources allow and obviously the end result is definitely stunning.

The August issue of Classic Mercedes Magazine (a publication in England) is devoted to the W123, and has a story on my friend. He has quite a collection of cars, most of which he has lovingly restored, along with many others throughout the years.
