W124 Diesel Conversion

Hi all,

I'm contemplating a diesel swap into my 88 230E auto saloon.

I've been offered a very cheap 98 E300 TD auto estate.

My mechanic would be swapping everything over from donar car.

Can anyone see a major stumbling blocks with the conversion

Thanks for info..

That is a good spread of years between the cars. Some of the parts may not be the same. I'd try to start with the same year donor car if possible.

The spread of years is not a problem because the W124 use the 606 so the engine from the 98 will fit no problem and he has a donor car I don't see a major problem doing the swap

I forgot. The only problem is the injection pump he needs to swap the electronic pump on the 606 and use one from a 603

Actually you don't have to swap pumps anymore, they make an electronic controller for the OM606's electronic pump now.

and you can keep the 5 speed 722.6 transmission from the 98 as well if you use this controller for the transmission
Gearbox Controller 722.6 ver 2

When my E290 rusts out I plan on using the above controllers to swap the drivetrain into a w124 or a w126

Oh and I forgot, the makers of the two controllers I linked to above collaborated so that they will communicate via a CAN signal, so they share sensor data with each other.

I can't remember exactly how much. I seem to remember about $300 a piece. It does say somewhere over on SuperTurboDiesel. If you can't find it just make an account and ask over there. It's a very friendly group.

To my knowledge the controller is only for mechanical injection pumps, so it won't work with CDI engines.

The transmission controller will work with any 722.6 transmission as far as I know.

$650.00 is the price on the link. If you want to use a mechanical injection pump from a 603 and save mony I have one for sale or trade

It probably wouldn't be much cheaper by the time you swap in the 606 pump elements to get enough fuel and have the pump calibrated. I would seriously consider using the transmission controller and the 722.6 the 5 speed overdrive, it would be nice to have.

If the '98 has an intercooler, it'll be tricky fitting it in the '88. You might need a 124 Diesel style oil cooler. You'll probably want a diff ratio compatible with the 606 if the '88 doesn't have overdrive now.
