1984 300D A/C compressor won't budge!
I'm trying to change the drive belts; I loosened all three bolts on the back of the R4 compressor, then loosened the 10mm adjustor bolt.
I also removed the bracket holding the oil cooler lines to the top the A/C compressor. The R4 compressor still will not budge! I thought there might be a retaining bolt holding the A/C hoses to the side of the engine compartment....there doesn't appear to be any. Any ideas? |

There are four bolts on the back of the r4. One of them is much smaller and only holds the manifold in place. Are you counting that as one of the three? There should be 3 more (17mm if I recall)

I only see three 19mm bolts on the back of the compressor and one 10mm adjustment bolt facing up on the driver's side. Are you talking about the bolt that holds the hoses to the compressor? I don't want to loose my freon...... I have loosened all of them and the compressor still won't move!

Hmm. Okay then you should have removed everything holding it in place. You should be able to loosen the adjuster until the nut is completely clear of the bracket and it should move freely. Maybe its corroded in place?

Also, how much did you loosen the mounting bolts? They have spring washers that may be making it harder to rotate. You might want to back out each bolt by 1/4" or so.

I've backed them out about 1/2 inch. Still no joy. I'm thinking of using a pry bar prying between the compressor and the frame.

Be careful prying against the compressor. The outer sleeve is not held in place as securely as you might think it is. See Compressor failed spectacularly for what can happen if the sleeve gets pushed forward too much. (Different causes, potentially same result)
You did back the adjuster out a half inch or so, right? You might try tapping gently with a rubber mallet before you try to pry it.

SUCCESS!!!
Last night I took a short piece of 2X4" lumber and wedged it from the top between the A/C compressor and the frame. I then took a sledge hammer and hit it gently. Ultimately the compressor moved allowing me to remove the drive belt!!! SUCCESS!!!
