Moving an entire glow system to a gasser body.

I'm coming along slowly on the 617 diesel transfer to the 380 SE body.

I've decided to move the entire preglow wiring to the SE body because I have to change the dash. It's seems like the natural way to ensure that everything works like the German engineers expected.

My critical path is to remover the SE seats, console and dash and have it ready to accept the glow wiring harness after I remove the SD seats, console and dash.

I'm guessing that removing the wiring from the SD and taking it directly and immediately to the SE for reattachment is the safe way to do this.

I'd appreciate any criticism or help if anyone has done one like this.

Don't forget about the ignition rotary switch with the vacuum connection to shut down the engine. Diesels and gas models differ.

When I installed a 617 in a 380SL (a gasser) I chose to eliminate the stock system and replaced it with a Ford starter solenoid. I did keep the engine harness and the glow relay case so it looks kind of stock.

Here's how in case you're interested - Glow plug relay, 1982 300D Turbo

Sounds like you're comitted to the stock system, so this solution probably isn't for you...

Its the system I use. It allows for afterglow and the glowplugs can be turned off early (to save glowplug life) if you simply want the key on for accessory power.

Remember that the dash light has NO relation to the glowplugs actually being powered. They continue to be powered for up to 30 seconds after the light goes out (or the engine is cranked, whichever comes first)!
Altering the relay so the dash light is operated by the glowplug power circuit instead of the timer's suggested glow time is a simple modification. I will show the modification if somebody requests it.
Again, folks do not have to do what you do, and again, you really do not have all the answers or solutions. Actually, going through some of your "ideas", you offer very little by way of constructive assistance.

Yes Sir!

I considered that when I realized I get the joy of buying a new ignition tumbler since the original is 30+ years old and subject to creating future nightmares. I want to always be able to go to the dealer and get original replacements keys.

Should I grind the steering lock off this car or are the w126s steering locks not subject to causing problems? I do not think I've read any steering lock issue with these bodies.

Only 3 wires go inside the cabin; ignition (turn on the timer), starter (turn off the timer) and glow light.
Outside you have only the main 8 gauge supply, timer ground, glow plugs x5
I've considered manually controlling the glow system at the suggestion of a friend. In his opinion I could save on glow plugs and the time and knuckle skin required to remove and replace them. I also considered having the ability to glow different durations during different temperatures.

Imo, Mercedes did fine setting up the duration of the glow on this engine. I need to ream the glow chambers at least once a year and the price of glow plugs isn't enough to warrant risking the starter or even shorten it's life by reusing plugs. Overall, GPs are cheap and easy to handle, starters cost a fortune and are difficult to remove and replace.
