OM606 NA in a W140? Would It Work?

Just asking. I Have access to a great running OM606 Non-Turbo engine. I recently purchased a '93 300SD knowing that it had problems and have confirmed that it has a bent rod. I understand that the turbo version of the
OM606 was put in some of the W140's at the end but just thought I'd ask if a non-turbo engine would handle that massive chassis.

It would probably fit and work but would be a bit like putting a non turbo OM617 in a W126. The existing final drive probably wouldn't be great in hilly areas - but might be OK on the flat - will win no races at the traffic lights. Stick the non turbo OM606 in a W111!

If a non turbo om603 works in a w140, a non turbo om606 will will also work.

The 606 head flows a lot of air but its starved of fuel. I would put an om603 turbo injection pump on it for more power.

The 606 NA makes the same HP has the 603 3.5 turbo in the W126 (a bit less than the W140 3.5). I think torque is less though, and with a heavy W140 you need all the torque you can get.

If I had the same resources, and I was in your position, I would do it. You may still have to use a 603 IP or get the stand alone computer, but that would be a small price to pay. The good thing is that you could always add a turbo later if a donor was found. I believe the engines are the same internally, turbo and non.

it will be one very strange driving car, even in the W124 its bolted on at the factory the engine is very dead unless it revs past 2500 rpm.

Mine is quite peppy! My OM602 2.5 Turbo in my '93 W124 seems dead as compared to my OM606 in my '95 W124.

I think I may have found me an OM603 Turbo for pretty cheap. I'm going to look at it today so.... If it ain't what it needs to be then I may just try an
OM606 NA in the W140.

I used to have a '95, and I was impressed with the power it had for an N/A. It even got 30 MPG all the time! I doubt the 140 will get that kind of mileage, but it will be respectable for what it is (or will be).

I have this car and know how to drive it - it has plenty of punch once it spins up - its just a very odd feeling if you are tuned to low rpm diesel torque which the 606 NA doesnt have. It has loads of power, just needs the rpm to deliver it.

e.g. the 3.5 litre 603 in good shape can in some circumstances bark the tires on the W140 chassis at the 1-2 shift. I have yet to see an NA 606 do that even in a W124 in the best of shapes.

606

My 95 Model 606 is like a two stroke engine, nothing below 2500 then it comes on like a light switch! It likes to run...

A 3 liter 603 turbo is a more sensible replacement IMO. You'll enjoy a naturally aspirated 606 more with a numerically higher diff ratio.

Understood...

I know that the OM603 is the one to have for this car but I have two options with regard to an OM606.

Option #1- I have an OM606 NA block and head, IP, and numerous other parts as well as a tranny and differential from a W124. Bear with me. I'm just listing what I have. I'm just trying to create a meal outta what I have in the kitchen so to speak.

Option #2- I have a lead on an OM606 Turbo Engine (1999) but it has unbelievably high mileage on it. The owner drove from NC to Michigan twice a week and I have been told that it has been maintained religiously. So far I've only seen a video of the engine running and from what I can tell it runs very well. There's no smoke and supposedly no oil use. Are you ready for this? It supposedly has 745k on the engine I'm not making this up folks. I can buy the whole car for $800.

Option #3- I have a few OM603's on my list. All of them are priced fair.

Even with the high mileage, the 606 turbo has my vote. Getting the whole car is a bonus.

Getting a running car means you can test the drivetrain out before swapping it. But i'd be leery of that many miles too. But perhaps some new rings and valve guides would freshen the motor up nicely.

Could always buy the turbo car, rebuild the turbo and fit it and everything else onto your NA 606, I know people won't like me suggesting this, but others have got reliable 350hp from the .910
