Thank You!!!

So, I guess this is actually a 79. Talked to seller again, he could not find a casting date by the starter. Will probably go and do a compression test, and try to start it in a couple of weeks (360 mile round trip) If everything checks out MIGHT buy it. In meantime will keep a look out for a low mileage, cheap donor car within a 500 mile radius.

What compression readings should I look for 380/400 ??

Thanks Everyone

Actually the new model year begins in August. So that engine is from a 1980 model year 300d.

You might need to remove the starter to see the casting date.

That would also explain why it has pencil type glow plugs. The 78&79 had loop style.

My .912 engine has 26 C (March) 80 cast on it behind the injection pump. It had loop glow plugs...

(hehe)

UPDATE, Seller confirmed motor was a 1979, I told him I would not be interested in it unless I ran a compression test. He pulled it up to the shop, and could get the engine to only turn 3/4 of a revolution, using a socket on crank bolt. So this motor is toast!

Thanks for all replies/help
