Size wrench to remove head bolt
Hello does any one know proper size I think you call it torx bit in that would fit half inch drive to remove the head bolts on the 617 motor? Also a part # for the heater hose that would go from the middle of the motor to the firewall. I'm putting a different motor in my sd and my engine hose exited at rear of motor and on new motor it exits it exits in middle trying to eliminate a splice hose has to have a 90 as soon as it comes off motor then go to rear auxiliary firewall. And could someone also tell me the thread size and pitch of the thread in the head that the lock nut that holds the prechamber in is that is the thread in head not thread that injector screw into. Thanks

NOT Torx. They are XZN, aka double hex. Size should be 12mm.

I have the tool, a 1/2" socket w/ allen-wrench looking insert (long) and the proper tip to insert in the head bolts of my OM617.952 engine (turbo). I bought it from a M-B vendor, perhaps Peach-Parts here for ~$15 (~5 yrs ago). I removed the head from my failed 1985 engine.
I agree that it is not a "torx" or "allen" head, though it is a similar "internal" (or "female") gender. The "double-hex" mentioned may be the correct term, which I think is also termed "12-point" in wrench-world, though I vaguely recall "double-square", which implies 8-point, so count the number of corners. There are bolts w/ 12-point male heads (high quality like aerospace) so insure it has a picture if ordering something generic, instead of one stated for our engines. Sorry I don't recall the mm size. |

The corners of the triple square are 90deg, while those of the double hex are 120deg. Although both have twelve points, the tools are not compatible. |
Correct. My mistake.

Thanks all I ordered the XZN 12 point 12x140 mm socket to take out the nead bolts they said it will fit a variety of M.B. and V.W. engines with the 617 being one of them seems like everything you touch you need a special wrench. I also just purchased a 36mm box wrench to take out where the water outlet and temp. sensor outlets are lucked out picked it up at a flea market $15 its about 20" long to give you some leverage.
