1999 Mercedes E300 new to me with a few more issues....

Good afternoon all

I purchased a 1999 Mercedes E300 with 230,000 miles. There are two issues I want to tackle:

1. The windows work intermittently. They seem to have the same response from the center console master swithches and the door switches. I was told by the previous owner the problem had predicted for some time. Are there any suggestion of where to start?

2. The glow plug could light stays on when the car is being operated. It does cut off during the glow/ starting cycle, but comes in once the car is running. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your time.

Ron

Check to see if a drink has been spilled in area of wondow switches. GP lite issue typically means you have at least one bad glow plug.

Item 1:
The power windows on a 210 are not set up like earlier models. Each door control module gets a separate unswitched, independently fused, battery feed. There is not a central relay that controls all the windows like a 123/124/126.
The window commands from the front console (known as the lower field control panel in the MB documents) are sent via CAN bus to the doors. The local switches on the back doors connect directly to the door controller/motor assembly.
I would check the CAN bus network junction connector under the carpet at the right front passenger door sill. Remove the door sill and peel back the carpet, you will see a device with a bunch of two pin connectors, the wires will be solid brown and brown with red stripe. This ties all the body CAN bus segments together in the car.

Also open up the lower control panel (it's just a friction fit, open the cup holder, grab the edge by the cup holder, and pull up gently) and make sure the connectors are plugged in securely underneath.

What happens if you point the remote at the IR receiver in the drivers or front passengers door handle and hold the "unlock" button down? This should drive all the windows and sunroof open. The "lock" button closes everything. Do this out of direct sunlight, it works much better in the shade or in the evening.

Item 2: try scanning OBDII codes, the glow plug controller will report dead glow plugs. Except it is one code for plugs 1 or 2, another for 3 or 4, and a third for 5 or 6.

Be very careful with the glow plugs on an OM606. They are long and they can easily get stuck in the head and break off when you try to remove them. Many threads here on this.
