I've been gone a while and I've been without a diesel for almost a year now. my 126 needed a radiator and I could not find one for less than $800 plus labor to put it in so I got rid of it
but now these 211 cdi's are beginning to fall into what I would like to spend on a car for ubering. I've read about the common problems brakes, suspension, black death, etc. but budgeting for all this is easy when you know it'll be expensive when, not if, the high ticket items need replacing.
the 126 was not a good fit for us as a DD, which I found out the hard way and I'm just asking the forum's opinion about the 211.

Not wrenching makes things very expensive especially on an old car. What was wrong with the SD? Were I not wrenching and wanting to Uber, I would buy a used comfortable crap box that didn't need much work.

With a well functioning starting point and wrenching, an SD should make a fine Uber car. They are reliable, have room and are interesting enough to get some business.

You need relatively new car to Uber. Uber needs to approve your car, 2005 or newer. So CDI 2005, 2006 just make the cut.

If you are going to do Uber, you need a car that is low cost per mile and easily repairable, as in go to any auto parts store and walk out with what you need.

Pretty much any " US domestic " mini van would fit the bill. Buy one from a soccer mom in a good part of town that is slightly dinged and cookie crumbed, scrub it up, change a few parts that are at the end of their useful life, get AAA gold towing and drive. Accept that the car will be destroyed in use, it is just a tool.

And, keep detailed records of all expenses as this will let you know if you are actually making money or bankrolling a community taxi with your day job.

If they just make the cut, they will soon not make the cut and be obsolete for this intended purpose.

I may just buy it as a reward for excellent ubering. I'm currently doing it in an 04 forester.
I think I have an irrational desire to do things the hard way.

How are you Ubering in an '04? I thought they required cars 10-years-old or newer? When I looked at it a few weeks ago they said they were requiring '06s.

I'm in a newish market and the requirements are different in each city. it's also manual transmission which isn't allowed in most of California (for ubering)

I wondered if maybe different markets/states had different requirements. Weird that they have a policy regarding manual transmissions one way or the other.

I would totally Uber for a few hours over the weekend in my 1992 300D 2.5, just here on the island I live on, but like I said Uber requires a 2006-or-newer vehicle here. I mean, on one hand, I get why they don't want people driving folks around in a clunker, and (probably more importantly) want their passengers to have the benefit of the most modern safety devices. But on the other hand, an older mid-to-full-size Benz exudes class and character, and is a nice way to get around, I don't care who you are, lol.

I tell myself they're the crown vic of Europe and therefore would make excellent taxis. but I'm sure it doesn't have any bells nor whistles. and parts are cheaper.
I think I'm crazy.
