om615 diesel pump

I have a mercedes 200d om615 and there's an oil leak between the diesel pump and the block,

Can I replace the gasket without loosing the engine timing?
If I lock the pump and remove it and change the gasket between the pump and the engine and install the pump again,do I loose the engine timing?

At this present time, I don't know of a way to lock the pump and keep it from moving.

If you could lock the pump, you could mark the pump flange if not already mark and remove the locked pump and insert it back in and remove the lock.

Best to consult a manual.

When you randomly pull the pump out you have the 4 element springs and the fuel supply/lift pump springs that can cause the pump to rotate due to the sprig tension and pump camshaft position.

All that leaves is the normal method of turning the crank damper in the direction of rotation till the engine is coming up on the compression stroke and stopping at the normal timing marks. At that point look at the alinement marks on the block and fuel injection pump flange and note where they are and or make them yourself.

Once the fuel injection pump is removed you should see the timing maker on the drive gear and the front bearing retainer. When you insert the pump back in those need to be properly lined up. However, even with all that you are supposed to drip time it again because timing chain stretch, and wear and other wear will change the timing slightly.
