1999 E300TD belt replacement
Getting ready to attempt this myself, and wondering if you need to remove the fan to change the belt.
Thanks |

It makes it easier but IIRC you can change it without removing fan.

Yes a little frustrating with the fan in place but doable.

Just did mine.. Left fan in place. Jacked up one side so I could reach under easier to route part of the belt. A little challenging but I think it took me 20 minutes give or take and this was my first time on the 606 car.

Take you belt and turn it inside out,so the ribs are on the outside.
Flatten one end down and from the alternator side feed it up between water pump and crank pulley, so feeding from 7oclock position to 1 oclock position. Once it comes through this end can then be fed around the tensioner pulley. With it around the tensioner pulley it then is just a matter of moving the belt over the top of the fan before putting it around alternator and making sure its alinged on crank pulley and the final pulley being the power steering pump. The above may not make much sense until you have changed your first belt but it is the easiest and quickest (two minutes) wat to do it without removing or lifting car. Look at the drawing in this link and the above should make sense. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=e300td+serpentine+belt+replacement&prmd=svin&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwitv5aBztDPAhWDjSwKHRERAtwQ_AUICSgD&biw=320&bih=460#q=e300td%20serpentine%20belt%20replacement&tbm=isch&tbs=rimg%3ACap3Dr42XYM1IkBDJMG901wFgR_1ajWHz59ncs04PhjuAuhKdWTe2WRgbQDTc9xVq7uXRVCOXurAR7I-sEpDn8kznGOQDz4oNBWe9KhIJQyTBvdNcBYERnlW7uRF0WrAqEgkf2o1h8-fZ3BHAhcCNq_1HvTioSCbNOD4Y7gLoSEdx9qLsPYAw7KhIJnVk3tlkYG0ARn1rhV2aqT2UqEgk03PcVau7l0RGeVbu5EXRasCoSC VQjl7qwEeyPEZ5Vu7kRdFqwKhIJrBKQ5_1JM5xgRnlW7uRF0WrAqEgnkA8-KDQVnvRGssTXtOlG05g%3D%3D&imgrc=VCOXurAR7I-eBM%3A |

Wow thanks, that would have been much easier...I fought with it for about an hour...trying to thread it around each pulley.
The image you linked is a 603 but the 606 is pretty much the same. They both share the same tensioner arrangement where you use the tire lever in the black plastic block to slowly release and then reapply the tension.

tie a string around the belt before you install it, then use the string to pull it up between the tight spot at balancer/tensioner pulley.

That is not the same belt. The belt in that DIY is the little belt that ties the two electricall cooling fans together in front of the a/c condenser. The left fan has a motor, the right fan is a dummy that is driven by a belt from the left fan.
The belt the OP is looking for is the main serpentine belt on the engine that drives the alternator, water pump, power steering, and air conditioning compressor.
