If think you might find you're better off just tapping it on there with a hammer and punch - only on the inner race of course - as you've got to have a really long sleeve to fit over the splines...

Yup, used the inner part of jack stand with a few old inner race middles. Went on fairly easy, 4/5 taps at most to snug it up.

The old bearing looks to have overheated in the rubber mount letting it slip out/distort, with both side covers removed, there was no visible grease/lube.

Took her for a run today what a difference, silky smooth, no vibrations when ticking over, very pleased.

MB bearing manufactured in Slovakia, Meyle in Germany..GOOG or something..

..just to add, I don't think it was bearing failure due to poor quality, most likely the lower engine angle causing it to overheat losing hold of the outer rubber casing.

When the carrier was removed, the bearing was angled at 15 or so degrees. At the time I put this down to using the puller which it may well have been.

Perhaps being a wagon the props longer too, accentuating the angle, not sure but all good now..(holds breath).

..btw, changing the mounts, what a difference, everything is so much smoother, from shifts to starting/stopping the engine.

Yep, probably the best single improvement made to the car, so easy to swap out too.

Went for 4 wheel alignment at MB approved specialist, $442.47 for MB customers

Starting to come together now, still need to sort out exhaust which is not on EPC, problems matching up.

The vehicle data card mentions 'Pollution Control Device' which I guess relates to these two bulges, cats further down and listed.

Tail pipe pressure is not great which may indicate plugged cat or these doofers, or both.

the american version of this car has one catalyzer only and it gets plugged up because of its remote location (it takes quite a while for it to heat up). It happened to my car and I cut it out and found a generic diesel catalyzer and had it welded in.

The original catalyzer was too rich for me (about 1400 dollars) - the difference between it and the generic one was the original has 2 inlets and one out while the replacement had one in and one out - not too much work for a good exhaust welder.

btw - uk is doing diesel emmissions testing on older cars?

the driveshaft bearing is supposed to have a C3 clearance spec.

btw - a 6006 bearing is pretty easy to purchase, its also used in most skateboard wheels.

This is exactly what I have found too although mine has the additional two chambers as shown, not sure what they are though and neither does anyone else.

The actual cat as you say is way down the pipe, mine has two pipes into one cat then one out branching into two before entering the center box.

Your thread made an interesting read on the subject, especially the pics showing how bad the downstream cat was plugged. Lots of back pressure adding to EGR woes.

I have managed to finally source a stainless steel unit with cat as per factory spec without the bulges (whatever they are), from a test perspective they are not required until a bit later - this from the supplier site:

"NOTE:

All European (EU) cars (outside of the UK) must be fitted with a Type Approved catalyst and all UK cars registered after March 2001(Y Reg) require a Type Approved catalyst. For this reason we will need your vehicle registration number before we can process any orders for catalytic converters. If we don't have your VRM we will have to cancel this order."

Going to add a water injection kit this week which may help with carbon build up, will let you know how this pans out.

That sounds like something Mulder or Scully would say -

i did however read the load capacity was rate at 39nm, didn't think that was a lot in laymans terms but bear in mind I have absolutely no idea what that means..
