Can I diagnose Neutral Safety Switch from above
84SD doesn't always crank when key is turned to start. This is becoming more prevalent. I understand that I can make it crank by using the jumper block in the engine compartment.
This car has always had a place at the top of "Drive" where the shifter needed to be moved a little further before it actually goes into drive - ie shift past the indent and it always drops into gear. This makes me think the linkage adjustment is off. There may be additional issues. I haven't been able to consistently make it not crank or consistently make it crank. It has always cranked after moving the shifter around but there doesn't seem to be a sweet spot that works every time. The shifter itself is spring loaded and doesn't appear to have unusual slop in it. I would like to order parts to make sure that I don't get stuck on the road but am not near my floor jack with time to get the car in the air. There is no indication that the battery, connections or starter are at fault. Is there a way to differentiate between worn shifter bushings, the NSS and a linkage adjustment without pulling the console &/or climbing under the car? Will the NSS from an 85 parts car work in an 84SD? There were some changes between the 84 & 85 for other items. Just wondering whether the NSS was affected.

Are you sure it is not the bushings in the shifter linkage? Took care of my problem. 81 300SD.

If the issue is getting stuck on the road, you know you can jumper it to get started.
To diagnose the problem you need to get under the car. There were differences in NSS between '84 and '85 on some cars, so it all depends.

While you're under there it sounds like you're having shifter bushing problems, replace those and your selector will work properly.

Just went through this. Check out this thread. It has some good photos of how to locate the related connectors in the passenger compartment.
Click, Click, Click Then it is just a matter of measuring voltages as you crank. You've basically narrowed it down to the NSS and the ignition switch. If you look at the signal (12v) on both sides of the NSS available under the kick panel by the tunnel, you'll be able to isolate the problem to one or the other unless it is bad wiring or a connector.

Try starting it in neutral when it will not start in park. If it starts in neutral and the shifter bushings are not sloppy, my money is on the NSS.
Good luck!!!

Maybe mine was a quirk. The NSS was pretty new and was a cheap no name clone of the Mercedes part.
