Alloy : Rubber corrosion - Anyone know of an assembly paste?

G'day Folks,

I've got a bit of powdery corrosion that's happening under some of the rubber hoses on my W201's cooling system. It isn't bad (as all) but I'd like to beat that little bugger down before it becomes a problem.

Assembly pastes such as Duralac are commonly used on aluminium (alloy) to steel connections. This stuff is well known in aircraft industry and also in the maritime world - but it doesn't seem to be suitable for anything that comes in contact with ethanol (coolant) and I'm not sure if it is suitable on plastics / rubber...

...so I'm looking for a product that is good for quite high temperatures - doesn't mind water / coolant / anti-freeze and will stop corrosion on aluminium alloys encased in rubber.

Anyone ever heard of such a beast?

I had some of that on my w123. I had assumed it was calcium deposits from someone using tap water to fill the cooling system sometime before I got it. Not sure that it will really help you in this case, but i found some small packets of radiator hose grease and used those during reassembly. I think it was just silicone grease with a different label though.

Its the aluminum corroding away. I clean it up and grease things with vaseline, or nothing. Eventually it will eat the housing away so much replacement will be required.

Thanks for the responses chaps - I've seen the "problem fitting your hose?" products but I really want something that will stop corrosion (like Duralac).

I've banged an email off to Hylomar to see if they can help. If I come up trumps I'll post back.

(Bit dodgy saying trump these days of course - not a political comment at all honest gov!)

Well Hylomar says

Hylomar M

(same stuff I've been using on head gaskets - and other metal to metal contact surfaces)

BUT

If spraying it on let the acetone evaporate before you push on the rubber parts. The Hylomar "putty" apparently won't harm rubber but the acetone might.

So I'll be giving this a go

Already got some in house (even)!
