I looked at a 78 300d this weekend, and would have taken it home but the seller needs to do everything at the DMV, and they were closed on the weekend.

I will be picking the car up this week, and it includes a parts car. I would hate to have it hauled away to scrap it. It's a 1978 300d. The head is separated from the motor. The interior is taken apart in area. Still has a pretty nice dash I noticed. Still has the color matching hubcaps on the wheels.


What would something like this be worth? I would rather see someone use it as a parts car, then it turned into scrap.

Unfortunately not much! How much? Can't put a dollar amount on it. To many variables. Can you use a lot of it yourself. Then it might be possible. Do you have a place for it, can you store the parts till used? What will it cost to get it to your place? Who is going to come and pick up the carcass when you are done with it. I bought a couple of parts cars. They all had turbo engines and I did well with a couple of them. But they suck up a lot of time, space and energy. I would say pass, pass, pass and let it go to a junk yard.

If the car is that close to being hauled away for scrap, offer "over the scale" scrap price. This keeps their attention because it will be more than they'd get from someone that buys and hauls in scraps cars.

I got $250 at PnP for my 240D (no engine or trans) and about the same for my 300SD, again no engine or trans. In both cases I brought them in (I have a car trailer). So add a bit more for the weight of the engine and trans but subtract a bit if they have to come and get it.

I'd pull the wheel covers and the interior (including the dash pad if it's decent) and call the wrecker. Those bits aren't too much to store and there's a decent market so they shouldn't sit around too long. The rest is just too plentiful to be worth the effort to mess with.

there are a lot of $20 bills left on these cars if your willing to wait for them. I put parts on Evilbay and they trickle out. Hood hinges for $69 free shipping. Just sold a glove box door for $55. switch's, trim pieces, electric items will sell but it will take a while and you do need to store them. I have the room, so I save everything off the car, and only scrap what will not sell.

I don't have a trailer, so I would have to have a place haul it. I called one of those places that do just that... They offered $3 per 100 pounds...... Yikes.

Scrap iron priced have really dropped from where the were.
Remember, PNP and other scrap yards are in the business of making money.
So naturally they buy low.

Buying a parts car depends on condition, and how bad an individual wants to get rid of it.
There is one now on CL, a 240D, guy is asking $150, and another one for $1200 with eng and or trans problems or both.

I picked up one with seized engine for $300, sold the head for $150. 78 240D
Picked up another for $440. 82 240D
Picked up a 80 240 with a hole in the upper pan. paid $750, but has an extremely clean body.

I have the room for them, so not problem........OH! I just saw another one on CL.... ......

For hauling, have a look at renting a pick up truck and trailer from U haul. Just be sure to check the online configuration menu to be sure the car you are hauling is "approved".

vonsmog has the right idea. if you can get it back to your place for not a lot, i say go for it. there's a lot of parts on it that you could store in a drawer that would more than make up for the one time cost of hauling it. then you can have a wrecker come take it away. like the early flasher relay/emergency flasher switch. or the early glow plug relay. first aid box. power antenna. even if you don't have it hauled back there are lots of parts that maybe would take you an hour to pull before you send it off for scrap

I listed it for $350 here. My girlfriend would kill me if I kept a dead car at our home. I've recently downsized a got rid of cars and motorcycles.

Buy an 18V impact gun and buzz it apart. You can haul it with a rented trailer. (doesn't everyone that messes with old cars have a truck to haul stuff? Otherwise, only get it if it has stuff you need to fix your current car.

I have some commercial plastic totes (paid $5 each) from my fleamarket days and use them for parts storage. They are strong and stack neatly.

For reference, I paid $500 for a running 85SD. An acquaintance scrapped a 240D for $300. I could have fixed that car but he priced it to me at $1,000.

Offer free shipping if you decide to fleabay it. You'll also need to be near the bottom of the price spectrum or top of the quality bin. Price is what sells there. Take 12 slightly different pics whether needed or not. Lots of pics get more looks.

As a person who has hoarded parts, and now am throwing away perfectly good parts (some unobtainable) just because I don't have the ability to easily transport or ship large parts, ... I agree completely.

If you need to buy it to make the deal with the good car, need some of the parts from the parts car, or feel that you can make some money on a few parts and scrap the rest then do it. Otherwise, you'll find yourself buried in a lot of parts that you thought valuable, and paying a roll-back to haul away the carcass full of said apparently valuable parts to the boneyard (BTDT) and stuffing your garbage can with the remainder for months after to make the girlfriend happy.

The biggest plus of parts cars is having the part on hand when something breaks or you have time to upgrade something, it is always there. If you don`t have the space it is really not worth wasting your time or the frustration of towing it, taking what you want. Life is too short, and there are u pull it yards for those times of need. Around here cars are free if you have to pick up, $60 a metric ton for scrap so nobody pays for cars anymore. Really sad. I would suggest you walk away with the nice car and move on, especially if girlfriend says no!

Get rid of the Girl Friend, and find one that likes old cars.
