Using OM606 in a Land Rover Defender

Hi after a suggestion on another forum to come here and seek the wisdom of people that truly understand Mercedes here I am!

I have a low millage e300td with the auto box but sadly due to the rust bug it is not worth saving, however I would like to use what I can from her to go into a Land Rover 110 that I plan on rebuilding.

Over this side of the pond we have a company that makes the adapters to fit the 606 onto a Land Rover auto box, however you have to swap the diesel pump for a modified mechanical type such as that from a 603 to overcome the electronic issues running the stock OM606 gives.

My question is has anybody taken the engine, auto box and all the ecu's from a donor e300 and made them work in another install? I know people make standalone engine and auto box controllers for running in different vehicles but why can't you take all you need from a donor car and make it work as it does in the Merc?

Any pointers or advice welcome...anybody doe the engine swap in a Land Rover and used the Mercedes auto box??

Thanks in advance.

I'd contact Dieselmeken (Goran Lindgren) in Sweden and see what he recommends to make the fuel injection work in a swap situation. My swap is an OM617 in a Chevrolet S-10 pickup but that's a fully mechanical pump so my experience won't be of much help to you (sorry) but Goran really knows his stuff. Be aware that he speaks Swedlish so it sometimes takes a few Emails to understand his answers but he's a REALLY great guy and does great work.

Another notion: Sounds like this swap has been done but I know the 5 cylinder JUST fits lengthwise in the S-10 and I had to rework the firewall to get the engine back far enough to get everything in. Seems like the 6 cylinder might be a tight fit but I confess I've never looked under the hood on the LR mentioned.

Good luck and have fun!

Dan

I would expect the 605 to have better overall length for the defender/series, but if the 606 fits then it's great.

No idea on the transmission, although it has been done and talked about on this forum.

The Injection Pump is a simple swap from a 603 turbo (I have two that I'd sell, unfortunately the shipping and duties, ...). It bolts on, and is all mechanical other than idle control to compensate for Air Conditioning or other loads, can be run completely manually although you will want a vacuum source to activate the engine shutoff.

If your 606 is a turbo, it has 6mm elements in it, if a N.A. 5.5mm. The 603 turbo IP has 5.5mm elements, to get full power from the 606turbo people have the 6mm (or larger, dieselmenken referenced above will get you there) installed in the 603turbo pumps.

Good luck, I many times wished I could stuff a nice Mercedes diesel in my Land Rovers, get rid of those leaky rover V-8 engines.

I have a 95 model 606 (non turbo), and the injection pump is pretty dang basic. One wire going to it for idle control with the AC but no electronics....
Maybe use an earlier pump.

Same basic (Bosch M series) pump as the turbo, and the same as the OM603 here in US (with a slightly different tune and ALDA).

Wow - well I bet you're glad you took my advice!

What a helpful bunch...

...I didn't understand that the advice from the people who make the kit was to use the mechanical pump.

Have you spoken with these people and asked why they don't like the more modern pump?

It could simply be technophobic - we can't be bothered with the electrickery. (I'm a bit like that myself sometimes!)

At the moment I can't think of any reason why a complete transfer of parts from one to the other wouldn't work. I could be wrong but it could all come down to fixing up something like a road speed sensor that might be making people feel like the "complicated" version isn't worth the hassle.

Thank you to everyone that has replied...its appreciated as I like to get everything in order before I jump in on a build be it a car or bike..so getting some sound advice is always a good starting point.

Sawnnb:-

Your not the first to suggest using a 200 or 300 and in all honesty this is probably for good reason being a much easier option...but I quite enjoy a challenge...have a look here at some of my car and bike builds and you will see I don't always take the easy route..but your right it would be easier but having driven the donor car I must say even in stock configuration the OM606 has impressed me..apart from the hassle to change seized glow plugs it's been a pleasure to work on so far!!!
http://Alex-Robinson.vidmeup.com/

Dan Stokes:-

He is a bit of a legend Goran, and from what I have learned so far a modified OM603 pump seems the way to go and nobody does them as well as he does, the OM603 is quite rare over here so getting a pump is quite expensive if I have to ship in but I think Goran offers one without an exchange unit and the small extra charge is less than me sourcing and shipping a OM603 pump to Goran.

We have a guy here in the UK selling conversion kits using the OM605 in Discovery and OM606 in Defenders with mechanical pumps and using Land Rover auto boxes.

The language barrier should not prove difficult as we have a gas upgrader unit at work from a Swedish
company and have an engineer on speed dial that speaks good English! !

babymog:-

The extra cylinder will stop it sounding too much like a well sorted td5. . along with the torque that the OM606 gives as the Landy will be going through the mud.

Thanks again to all for info and links...Stretch your right what a helpful bunch on here..when I worked over in the USA I was based out of Fort Worth in Texas...only issue I ever had was at airport due to explosive residue on my baggage due to my line of work...thankfully the letter I carried quickly resolved the issue and I never had a single unhelpful person!
