breather tube
I had to drive a couple milkes today with a borken breather tube. It broke as I was tinkering with the air filter. Will this have a horrible effect on the engine? What exactly is this thing for anyway?

It directs the blowby gases back through the engine where they are burned. It will make a BIG mess under that hood and there is a chance that the engine is intaking air that has not been through the air filter.

I agree. Duct tape it if you have to so that you keep as sealed a system as possible (not to mention saving some mess).
