Corrected: Mobil 1 0W40 $13.47 for 5 quart jug after rebate!

I've been using this in my 1995 E300 and 2005 E320 CDI. It is the current oil approved by MBNA for pre-particulate filter diesel vehicles (pre-2007). Since it is synthetic, I don't hesitate to run the full recommended mileage for the oil change interval when doing normal driving.

Mobil 1 0w40 is available in 5 quart jugs for $25.47 with delivery to your door from Amazon. With purchashes through 10/31, you can get a $12 rebate per 5 quarts with 10 quart limit. this is enough to do our individual cars:

Mobil 1 0W40 $13.47 for 5 quart jug after rebate

Here is link to rebate form:

Mobil 1 Rebate

Mobil 1 customer service confirmed that Amazon is included retailer but you need to include proof of shipment/delivery.

I did not know Mobil 1 has a new formulation as of early 2016 for the 0W40. It is called "0W40 Mobil 1 'FS' European Car Formula" and is labeled "FS" discretely to the right center on container front.

Per the website, https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/2013/06/20/motor-oil-wear-test-ranking/ , as pointed out by member "party", the new formulation has the highest wear protection ranking (#3) of any oil except 2 with additives added! The original "0W40 Mobil 1, European Formula" ranked 100 out of 190 oils tested for wear protection!

Here is an excerpt from the web site:
---------------
3. 0W40 Mobil 1 “FS” European Car Formula, API SN, synthetic = 127,221 psi
This new oil replaces the older version called, 0W40 Mobil 1, European Formula, API SN, synthetic. See below for the older version’s ranking position.
zinc = TBD
phos = TBD
moly = TBD
This new “FS” version was tested in Summer 2016. This oil produced the highest psi value ever seen in my testing, from any motor oil just as it comes right out of the bottle, with no aftermarket additives. Very impressive.

I also went on to test this oil at the much higher temperature of 275*F. At that elevated temperature, any hotter and thinner oil is expected to experience a drop in Wear Protection Capability. This oil did have a 16% drop in capability. But, even at that elevated temperature, it produced an impressive 106,876 psi, which still kept this much hotter and thinner oil in the INCREDIBLE Wear Protection Category.

I also tested this oil to find out its onset of thermal breakdown, which was 280F.
-------------

The original "0W40 Mobil 1, European Formula" ranked 100 out of 190 oils tested for wear protection and here is excerpt for it:

---------

100. 0W40 Mobil 1, European Formula, API SN, made in the U.S., synthetic = 82,644 psi
This is an earlier version that has been replaced by 0W40 Mobil 1 “FS” European Car Formula. See above for the newer version’s ranking position.
zinc = TBD
phos = TBD
moly = TBD
----------------------

I liked the old one......the new is even better having the highest wear protection ranking! One could argue this still is probably the best oil for any pre-2007 diesel Mercedes from and cost and performance standpoint (especially with the rebate making it $2.70/quart).

Just received my 2 5 quart jugs from Amazon. Both were the new "FS" formulation.

Although I believe in Mobil 1 products, they have different grades. This is (unless it has changed) a synthesized "hydrocracked" petroleum oil that Mobil introduced years ago to market against other lower-basestock "synthetic" oils.

The better product is IMO the "Extended Performance", or Delvac 1, TD&T, or what I'm required to buy: ESP formulas which are from a synthetic basestock / Group IV synthetic I believe.

Take a look at the link to link to the testing blog above. Apparently how the oils are produced or type of oil does not seem to correlate with wear protection. M1 0W40 is really the only easily obtained oil IS MB-Approval 229.5 and it has the highest wear protection rating. If it is MB approved, it has to meet the oil change interval requirements.

Take a look at the wear protection ratings of some of the "extended performance", Delvac 1 and TD&T. Warning, it is a long read but.....you will be surprised at how much lower they come in for wear protection.
