Changing lifters on a 603, part 2

Part 2

Photo #6

11. Then I pulled the lifter out of the oil, turned it over to drain the excess oil and put it in the head on top of a valve. I positioned them so that they oil hole in the lifter was close to where the hole in the head is located, but these turn while the engine is running so I don't think this matters. Photo #6 shows the first three cylinders completed.

12. Here is a photo with all of the lifters replaced. After this, I wiped all of the camshaft journals and applied a dot of assembly lube to each. I also applied assembly lube sparingly to all camshaft bearing surfaces and lobes.

13. Set the camshaft back in place. It is important to get the shaft rotated to where it was when you pulled it out.

14. Reinstall the camshaft bearing caps. Put them back in their same location (they are stamped with numbers). Again, the tightening instructions in the FSM should be followed carefully. And here is something I learned the hard way--before you get the camshaft bearing caps completed tightened, re-attach the camshaft sprocket. You want the bearing to not be tightened down so you can nudge things around to get the sprocket aligned on the cam correctly. Once the sprocket is on, finish torquing the camshaft bearing cap bolts.

15. Reinstall the chain tensioner.

16. Reinstall the camshaft sprocket bolt. Again, use a bar to keep the sprocket/chain/engine from turning. Torque this to specs.

17. Remove the tie wraps holding the chain to the cmashaft sprocket. Be careful not to drop pieces into the chain well (from experience).

18. At this point, I was about to close the camshaft area, but I still had a small container of new engine oil from the dunk/cycle the lifter spring operations. So I poured the oil over the camshaft from end-to-end.

19. Reinstall the valve cover. Do not over-torque these bolts.

20. Reinstall the crossover tube. If anyone knows of an easy way to do this I would love to hear it. I always have to remove the two Allen (hex) bolts holding the round part of the tube to the cylinder head just to reinstall this tube.

21. Start the engine, but do not rev it up for a few minutes. This came from the instructions that were in the box with the lifters. I assume this time is to get engine oil pumped into the lifters through the heads.

Remember, I am just sharing this so it might help someone when they do the job or help someone get up the nerve to try this job. If you don't like what you read here, feel free to comment and if you really don't like something, feel free to do the job yourself and document it here.
