W123 Transmission Leak
 

So the W123 going through, owner stated automatic transmission leaked due to a main seal; an't ask for details as not responding to texts. Does leak just sitting, and enough to run down the garage floor.

Pulled the exhaust heat shield off to find fluid only at the drain plug, part of the pan gasket, the rearward part of the torque converter housing, and most of the torque converter. Is this jive with a major seal leak?

There is no A.T.F. fluid anywhere else, though there is a thin film of engine oil on the front part and maybe the pan too, hard to tell. After putting in a replacement brake cable and its housing, you think I was working on a diesel fueled engine (it's gasoline). Will go after that another day... Just informing not simple look for red fluid.

Degrease the areas and take it for a hour drive and come back and see the exact place where it is leaking from.
Or if it leaks enough you could just idle the Engine and watch to see where it leaks.

Someone else with have to say if it is possible to leak from front pump gasket/seal. I believe it is difficult to tell it from a Torque Converter Seal leak peering through the little hole at the bottom of the bell housing.

Note that mine has been leaking from the torqe converter to Transmission and some from the tail shaft seal since I bought it in 2007. It could be only the seal or it also needs one of those "speedie sleeves" to repair the groove the seal has worn.

I just live with my leak and make sure the trans has enough fluid to avoid damage. But, I don't worry much about drive way stains as I just chemically clean the drive way when feel like it.

How does one degrease and not get it in your eyes and mouth? Don't think having a mustache helps. :P

Good to know could just leave it, that be my preference if means pulling the transmission.

At the rate it goes, would need to check every time get home; wish could be checked cold.

The house's drive and garage are epoxy coated, with me covering the odd bare spots in the garage (think it was where the huge gun closet was the P.O. had). But, the diesel oil stains are permanent: used about everything out there. Now don't waste money and use a bit of diluted Dawn to remove the trackable. Not my place and they don't keep it up, so why worry?
