Manual Trans speedometer drive
Hi there. I have been going through a 4 speed getting it ready to go back in the car. It is the older iron box. The speedometer cable wasn't turning and I found out why.
I popped the rear cover off and the small metal gear just spins on it's tiny shaft, I believe it's supposed to be tight in order for the speedometer cable to turn. I replaced all the seals and figured I would just look for a new gear assembly. On here Mercedes 240 D RWD INTERMEDIATE PIECE,REAR COVER, JOINT FLANGE I found the parts, but there seems to be 2 different part #s and 2 different prices. 124-260-0848 $34.50 124-260-0747 $36.00 Emailing them I got the response of "they are probably the same" Somehow I don't think they are the same with 2 different prices, does anyone have any experience dealing with this? I suppose I could just order them both and return the one that is different, but I would rather find out to be sure. Mine is also a bit different than the pic, mine has a ball that is pressed in the rear to seal it. |

The parts you've listed start with the 124 prefix and that does not seem correct for a tranny that was produced years before the 124 designation was eventually used. |

That would be
115-261-2620 on the rear cover I believe the side of the main casing reads 115-261-2501 it is hard to read Last edited by Blazemaster; 11-03-2016 at 05:07 PM. |

I dunno why you would need a speedometer! They'll hand you a time slip at the track with accuracy to 4 digits to the right of the decimal. And if you drive it on the street the nice officer will hand you a certified copy showing your actual speed. Furthermore, with a 240D the chances of getting a ticket (other than obstructing traffic) are slim to none.
Just giving you a hard time. I trashed the speedo gear on my Getrag just to make a plug the keep the oil in the trans. I'm no help at all. Dan |

Well I think I answered my own question. I've been searching for hours. I was looking at the wrong trans.
First I found a thread with similar part numbers, and found the trans may be a euro model. Then I randomly found a german site with a parts breakdown of that model trans. I could at least get part numbers from it, then put those in google. Mercedes South Atlanta had the part numbers in stock so I will try those. A bit more expensive than I first thought, but not horrible. I just hope it fixes my problem. Drive gear 115-260-0648 $47.50 Shaft 115-264-0132 $21.00 |
