Manual Trans speedometer drive

Hi there. I have been going through a 4 speed getting it ready to go back in the car. It is the older iron box. The speedometer cable wasn't turning and I found out why.

I popped the rear cover off and the small metal gear just spins on it's tiny shaft, I believe it's supposed to be tight in order for the speedometer cable to turn. I replaced all the seals and figured I would just look for a new gear assembly.

On here

Mercedes 240 D RWD INTERMEDIATE PIECE,REAR COVER, JOINT FLANGE

I found the parts, but there seems to be 2 different part #s and 2 different prices.

124-260-0848 $34.50
124-260-0747 $36.00

Emailing them I got the response of "they are probably the same"

Somehow I don't think they are the same with 2 different prices, does anyone have any experience dealing with this?

I suppose I could just order them both and return the one that is different, but I would rather find out to be sure.

Mine is also a bit different than the pic, mine has a ball that is pressed in the rear to seal it.

You should post the actual numbers off the transmission, should be something like 716.XXX and maybe a 123 XXX XX XX or 115 XXX XX XX number so the exact transmission can be identified. That will allow the correct parts to be identified.

The parts you've listed start with the 124 prefix and that does not seem correct for a tranny that was produced years before the 124 designation was eventually used.

That would be

115-261-2620 on the rear cover

I believe the side of the main casing reads 115-261-2501 it is hard to read

I dunno why you would need a speedometer! They'll hand you a time slip at the track with accuracy to 4 digits to the right of the decimal. And if you drive it on the street the nice officer will hand you a certified copy showing your actual speed. Furthermore, with a 240D the chances of getting a ticket (other than obstructing traffic) are slim to none.

Just giving you a hard time. I trashed the speedo gear on my Getrag just to make a plug the keep the oil in the trans. I'm no help at all.

Well I think I answered my own question. I've been searching for hours. I was looking at the wrong trans.

First I found a thread with similar part numbers, and found the trans may be a euro model. Then I randomly found a german site with a parts breakdown of that model trans. I could at least get part numbers from it, then put those in google.

Mercedes South Atlanta had the part numbers in stock so I will try those. A bit more expensive than I first thought, but not horrible. I just hope it fixes my problem.

Drive gear 115-260-0648 $47.50
Shaft 115-264-0132 $21.00
