W!23 automatic bolt to 84 W126 300SD?

I have read a lot online about this and I understand that there are risks associated with downgrading to the older, less robust transmission. The reason i would consider this is that I have a beater 300SD that finally toasted the 722.3 tranny in it, and have located a 722.18 in a nice parts car I can get for very cheap. My question is will it physically fit (bolt pattern, bellhousing and what not). It sounds like speedo/odo are different. Is the vaccum system the same? I know it's a somewhat desperate solution, but I don't want to ditch this car, yet as it sits it's not worth the 2 grand or more it would take to fix it correctly, and a 64K original mile drivetrain does sound appealing. I appreciate in advance any feedback...even if it is telling me how bad of an idea this is. Thanks!

The 722.118 transmissions will all bolt up. There are, however, two types of the same number. One has a rod at the front of the transmission and no vacuum - the other is vacuum only.

You need the gubbins from either type of 722.118 to make it shift.

Mercedes had a 722.120 (same gearing as the 722.118) fitted to the W116 turbo diesel but also fitted a rev limiter to stop enthusiasm at the traffic lights. This was meant to save the transmission from the engine.

#######

As you already know the speedometer is mechanical on the 722.118 - so that's a problem. The shifting controls are very different - so that's a problem. The 722.118 is "tuned" for different final drive ratio's so shifting / setting up the shifting will be difficult.

I honestly think you are better off sticking with a 722.303 - keeping looking for the correct transmission - there are potentially more of the correct type than the incorrect type out there

What Stretch says is very good advice.

I would add that if the .118 in play is the vacuum-only-control variety, you will likely have to do further work getting the vacuum setup correct. Without the vacuum set up properly you will have shifting issues. Also the body of knowledge on troubleshooting those .117/.118 transmissions is very slim.

Bottom line: not worth building frankencar for the sake of a few hundred dollars.

Hey guys thanks for the response. I knew there were issues. It's really not entirely about the cost as this driveline seems pristine. I can get the entire donor vehicle if it makes a difference. Only issue with it is the engine has a bad head and a tree fell on the car. I just don't want to sink a ton of money into my vehicle as it's a bit of a beater. Alternately, I could get an exact donor that is a 300sd, but it has been sitting for several years, and I was warned the transmission may be junk because of that. What do you all think about a car that is correct but has been sitting up for some time?

Why was the SD parked? If it wasn't a transmission problem then, it's probably good now.

Things sitting for a while aren't always fantastic when they get used again but after a bit of use they usually get better!

I'd change fluids and see how it works out instead of assuming it is probably junk
