1983 mercedes 300cd trans wont shift into 3rd or 4th

I changed the fluid and filter ,with trans x ,set the bowden cable, checked my fuel linkage ,and no luck so far.Ive read several threads and some put these items up as culpriets to look at.The modulator, check for pressure and setting, the kickdown switch -make sure its not hanging up ,the governor -it can have a broken spriraled plastic piece fail.Is this sounding more like the kickdown switch is not working at alll ,will the symptoms be only a 2nd gear realized? I get up to 40 mph max ,not much more.

Try just unplugging the kick down switch under the rug.

Does it drop into neutral or remain in second?

I'm looking for pics of the trans linkage & found this which may help someone.

http://jenniskens.livedsl.nl/Technical/Tips/Files/Mercedes%20722.4%20adjustment%20guide.pdf

It showed up as a result of asking Duck Duck Go "mercedes 722.303 linkage pic".

chas:

If disconnecting the kickdown switch does not have an effect, the next most likely cause of no upshift is lack of governor pressure. No governor pressure is usually caused by governor gear failure.

I never knew about the governor prob until reading a condition/ fix I read 2 days ago on this site. A common problem that should be looked at for yard pickups if ones interested in exploring a cheap trannie with easy fix.I replaced this cars original motor with a swap from a 300d ,the motor ran sweet and was able to drive the donor car in the shop so had no idea the fuss it would put up after install .
