Om617.950 into w210 E320 anyone try?

Has anyone ever herd of or done such a conversion? We have an E320 that is burning lots of oil and the trans is starting to slip (250k+ miles). I have a spare om617 and matching trans. The e320 weighs 100lbs less so weight would be a non issue. The V-6 M112 in the w210 e320 seems to be of comparable dimensions (eyeballing it). The battery will need to be upgraded as well as the glow plug system rewired. The biggest challenge I think would be the mounts and the drive train. Curious to see if anyone has done similar

I think the main question isn't if it's possible (anything is), but why???

Why put a engine with a design that dates back to 1957 in a car 40 years newer?
All the vehicles electronics without an ECU to talk to etc, (your speedo wouldn't work etc), it's a ***** ton of work for a huge leap backwards in technology.

The same reason others do a om617 swap. It is one of the best engines Mercedes ever built, provided it is well maintained. I have a spare instrument cluster, as well as a complete wiring harness for what its worth. And I agree 100% that it would probably be a **** ton of work, given that this is an entirely different chassis (a step below the S-class variants).

It would make for a very interesting project, which is why I am asking if other have attempted such feats before. I've seen some pretty crazy OM617 swaps.

Before you turn the first bolt, contact DMV and find out if you can register such a beast. You may end up with an off road vehicle.

I think that would cool. In New York, the trouble starts at 1996 and ODBII. But then also small passenger diesels are safety inspection only in upstate. So yes, check.

Just looking at the hoodline, my I think the valve cover may hit, or the air cleaner. The 61x is a tall engine.

I don't see anything to be gained here, especially when the W210 can be had in a 6 cyl diesel.

I doubt you'll need to do a complete wiring harness.

I moved the engine/trans from an 84SD to an 85SE and think I've done a good job on the wiring. I transferred the following harnesses by studying the FSM electrical drawings of both cars.

I have the notes if you want to move the wiring. You'll need a donor car to get the wiring from. You'll need the preglow loom, cruise control and some warning light wires to get it working and keep you out of trouble with warning lights.

I only spliced one wire to the brake switch so as to get the cruise to disengage when I hit the brakes. It's the same color wire so everything can be repaired or replaced using the FSM instead of memory. All wires were moved from one body to the other including the power supplies from the fuse box.

I have many pages of notes due to second guessing myself over and over for fear of screwing up the job. Frankly, I wouldn't go through it again.

This does not strike me as a great idea, but similar projects have been done. I just don't see the point.
