w115 300d oil pressure and temp issues.
Hi,
So to start, the oil pressure in my car has been normal until today likewise I was not having issues with overheating (it would go close to 250 then drop back down and not rise again). Today I adjusted my power steering belt because it was squealing. The squealing has stopped but now my oil pressure has started to drop and my engine is overheating. Could this be related? Also I recently had someone do a replacement of all the gaskets on the car because they were leaking. Everything is great other than the oil filter housing, there is a leak that has grown over the last couple days and I noticed it leaking excessively after I adjusted the power steering. Could this issue cause an oil pressure drop and rise in engine temperatures? The mechanic mentioned he had issues with the oil filter housing cap and that is the area it is leaking form. He didn't really explain the issue clearly and told me i needed to source a new one. (could it not be tight enough to form a proper seal and thus the leaking? Does anyone know where to source these parts? Thanks for your time in advance. |

The PS pump is unrelated to oil pressure. Was the belt slipping on the water pump? Is the water pump running properly? Fan clutch engaged and spinning the fan? Are you sure that the belt to the alternator is tight and not slipping causing low voltage? When was the thermostat last replaced? Are you sure the engine is overheating, like have you taken an infrared thermometer and takes readings on the head and radiator to make sure the temp really is too high? You have checked the fluid level in the cooling system right?
Unless the oil leak is gushing fluid, it can't be big enough to cause a loss in oil pressure. Try replacing the O-ring on the oil filter housing cap and see if the leak stops. If the cap is deformed or broken, you'll have to source a replacement. |

I have not verified other than via instrument gauges that the temp is high. I just replaced the thermostat. Fan clutch and alternator seem to all be preforming well and as before.
Fluid is good, no leaks from the cooling system. I will double check the belts to make sure the water pump is spinning well. What could cause a supped change in oil pressure? |

OK so i took it for a spin, and the temp sat around 250 for a few minutes then dropped and didn't try to jump up again.
The oil pressure seems to fall to 30 when I am stopped and in drive it boost to about 35 when i am in park and its at 45 when I am in motion. I have not had any issues with the oil pressure before. Can the serpentine belt cause oil pressure issues? |

Also, obviously i recently changed the oil and resealed the oil system (other than the leak from the housing cap. Could there be gunk thats been cleaned out of the engine after this process blocking the filer or something else?

The belt should be unrelated - though weird things DO happen. Given that both gages are affected I'd suggest that you add an extra ground wire from whatever the sensor grounds to (probably the head IIRC) and a chassis ground (maybe the battery - terminal). Poor grounds can throw anything electrical off in it's function and it's an easy thing to eliminate. Not saying that this is it, just that you can easily take it off the table.

The oil pump is not driven by the accessory belts, even if they were removed, you'd still be developing oil pressure. I'd suspect some electrical infidelity in the instrumentation. This can be verified by taking manual temperature readings. Oil pressure normally moves around once the engine is hot. With it idling and in gear, you should be roughly mid-position on the gauge, when you're under way you should be topping it out. The gauge shouldn't be sitting pegged all the time, usually indicates a bad sending unit or poor ground.

Oil pressure sounds completely normal. IIRC the oil pressure gauge is mechanical, not electrical on that car.
Check the leak at the housing to confirm that it isn't an oil cooler hose. If it is stop driving it until fixed. Good luck!!!

Hi everyone,
Thank you for your direction. Im going to test the ground on my gauges. I pulled the batter out got it in the garage and looked to see where the leak is coming form. It seems around the seal of the oil filter cap, and also the engine cooling line. It looks as if there are two engine cooling lines. I think they both need replacing. One runs to the top the other runs to the bottom. Are these lines available at pelican parts or will I have to find other means to source them? I add pictures to the post of the lines I'm looking to replace. |
