OM602 oil leak - how bad?
Was under the car today & noticed some pretty bad oil seepage. No idea how long this has been going on - it's slightly wet and smudgy, so I know at least some of it is fresh, but I don't think it's a very fast leak - at least, I haven't noticed a need to add any oil over the last couple of months. Anyone wanna take a guess at how serious this might be?
The top of the engine looks pretty dry, but I noticed from underneath that the wastegate actuator is completely caked in oil (not pictured). I took a closer look from the top, and noticed some oil on the turbo, as well (pic #2). This is what worries me most, I guess - am I looking at a potentially catastrophic failure here? |

Turbo oil drain tube 2 gaskets one on each end and one o ring in the middle of the tube. Or blow by through the vent?

Okay, so not super, super serious? I mean, obviously an oil leak is no bueno, but if it's just a bad gasket that seems a lot better than a failing turbo or something. Probably easy enough to DIY during an oil change?

You'll be in there when you do your waist gate swap meanwhile try to identify the source by cleaning everything up.

The head gasket between the timing chain cover and the underside of the cylinder head at the very front of the engine is a not unseen happening. The timing chain tensioner uses an fairly large diameter aluminum "seal ring" to sel it to the pressurized oil circuit that flows through the cylinder head and pressurizes the tensioner.Leaks at that aluminum seal ring are not unheard. As has been mentioned the turbo oil and drain connection are on that side of the engine, but they are further to the rear so that makes me wonder if oil from that could end up around the front of the engine, maybe. The possibility of blow by vapors draining back out of the pressurized turbo output is possible for certain, I have this on a high mileage 6 cylinder of this type engine. Your going to need to get a mirror and a flashlight and get a better look. If that isn't definitive a couple cans of carb cleaner and clean it up around the usual suspects it won't take long for the black stuff to reappear on these diesels. Self indicating they are! |
