Bowden(sp?) cable problem

1985 300d - As the throttle is advanced, is the Bowden cable to the transmission supposed to advance all the way to full throttle? Mine "slips off" the lever on the top of the engine as the throttle is advanced i.e., the lever the cable is attached to snaps back, doesn't follow the throttle lever. When the throttle is released, the Bowden cable lever will snap back into place. I suppose this means the assembly on top of the engine is worn out? The car as 385+ thousand miles, starts on first couple of turns, stops very quick (engine). Any suggestions, does anyone have a good lever assembly for the top of the engine for sale? If so, PM me.
Thanks
Jerry

Your OM617 is different than the OM603 in my SDL, but yes, the Bowden cable travels with the throttle linkage all the way to full stop.

For a temporary measure, you might consider a piece of stiff wire to keep it linked for the time being. It could just be a rivet or something has fallen out as well.

mine has slipped off a few times - likely do to me working around it and knocking it off. I noticed that the design could potentially be improved to make it much more difficult for the cable to pop off. but i belive it should be on for the full travel of the throttle.

Andrew, my cable doesn't pop off, the lever it's attached to slips over the throttle lever just below it. I may be able to bend it enough to keep it from slipping over the lever below. Thanks for your input!
