'83 240D - odometer reading 1/3 of actual

I've been logging fillups using the app "Fuelio". It is showing that I'm getting about 8mpg! Something ain't right.

Turns out that my odometer is reading way low. Last night, I took a trip that should be about 58 miles according to google maps. My odometer indicated 19 miles! I am using the 6 digit odometer and not the trip odometer, by the way (I lost the knob for the trip odom reset)

The speedometer runs correctly. There are local "your current speed" indicators that always match up with the benz speedo. But the odometer is way off.

I thought these were tied together but apparently not.

Any ideas on how this can be happening?

Common problem on W123 speedometers. The shaft for the odometer gears is slipping. Use the forum search to find the repair procedure.
