(Yes I can order the filter from the US for a lot less, but with the 33 percent exchange on our dollar and the extra shipping charges, the savings are so eroded that I need to make it part of a significant order for it to work. Liquids cannot be shipped transborder anymore, so I have to drive to NY if I want the oil cheaper.)

So, respectfully, at more than $100 do to an oil change I am not even sure I need, on barely used oil, I do reserve the right to start "threads like this" to get some clarification.

As it happens I am a former oil change fanatic who only recently has learned to be okay with going more than 2500 miles on synthetic in my diesels (in normal usage) after reading a lot by Whunter on the topic.

I am going to go with the "yeas" on this one.

Thanks everyone for the input.

I guess everyone has a different threshold of what is reasonable to spend, but I think $125/oil change is not too bad, if you're using synthetic, especially if you're only doing it once/year. If you really want to save money, and the vehicle is super low mileage, why not just do annual changes with dino oil?

Again, I don't know if the annual oil change recommendation is based on any specific science documenting degradation in oil quality over time regardless of use, or if it's just a convenient interval that is easy to remember (I suspect both), but it's a recommendation I've heard thrown around long enough by different manufacturers that I guess it's sort of ingrained for me.

On a car that sits for extended periods how about drying the air with a dessicant filter before the air filter inlet? Just have to remember to remove it before starting the engine/ using the car.

I am in the camp that it is fine leaving synthetic oil in for 2 years.

As long as the last time you run the engine, that you drive it for at least a good 20 mins or so to burn off any moisture before storing.

You can send a sample to Blackstone for ~$25 if you want some data on your car, specific oil and driving habits.

They said to run my next change on the Cummins up to 13,000 mi. I'm driving it ~12,000/yr. I haven't tested a 617 in a low annual mileage condition.

The Datsun Z has been sitting with dino oil for a couple of years & will get a change before I start it up again.

What brand of oil is that?

[QUOTE=Zacharias;365]
Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic 5W/40.

This was a 24V Cummins & not a 617. All of the numbers were well within "universal averages". This was my 1st sample so I don't have any data.

@kerry,
It looks like it says that the oil is good or needs changing. Does it give any other information such as antifreeze in oil or indicate excessive metals of 1 type or another?

Oilyzer was a different named product. www.oilyzer.com no longer exist.
From pics I've found, the Lubricheck front face looks just like the Oilyzer except with the flash light button deleted, syn/std switch changed to gas/dsl. Anyone know the history between the 2 companies?
