Sunroof weatherstrip replacement?
 

Hello
Does anyone have experience replacing the weatherstrip that goes around the perimiter of the sunroof opening?

Mine has a crack and is pulling away rom the opening in a couple of places.

I have done it on a sliding roof, but not on a sliding and tilting roof. The front seal of the sliding roof is really easy to remove, but it is exceedingly difficult to return as you have to feed the seal into a channel. The side seals are merely crimped by the guide positioned below. These are relatively easy (they are the same, I understand, on the 108, 115, 116, 123 and 126 cars with sliding roofs.

blloyd7: I recently ordered and received a full set of sunroof seals from Fast Lane for my 81 300TD Turbo wagon (123.193). the side slides are felt or cotton weatherstrips on metal strips (not obvious how they are attached except there appear to be a couple of phillips screws and holders back under in there that jobah could be referring to), the front and rear seals are heavy channeled rubber gaskets. My problem is that what I received looks nothing like the seals installed in the car. I have not yet removed the original equipment and won't until I have the right parts on hand, so I can't tell you what you might run into. It does not look simple though. I asked Phil to look into the parts problem and gave him my VIN# but he has not gotten back to me yet. I too would appreciate any info from others on the method for performing the replacement. On the 124 itlooks like 1 continous piece, that presses into a channel.

I will have to look closer.

FIRST OF ALL - MEASURE! There is a German and an American Mercedes and they differ greatly by like 7 1/2" different! The Import American Mercedes has an opening width of 30" wide.
The German Mercedes (gray market) has an opening width of 37 1/2"
Measure that seal before doing what I did, pull it mostly out - only to notice that I had more more old rubber than new rubber.

As for the seal going into the slot, I found it went in like a charm, of course WD40 sprayed on both mating surfaces makes a world of difference. (learned from working in shop where we mounted Lexan into rubber molding that mounted into steel opening)

Which Brings me to my own Question - Where to buy the Seal for the 123 240D ? (gray market)

The MB Dealer (parts manager) in Okemos, MI told me he could order from Germany any part. That just plainly sounds expensive!

blloyd7: This is a follow up to my previous post. Phil informed me that he checked and I have the right roof seals for my car. I am amazed because the replacement seals appear much larger (fatter, more complicated channels, etc.) than the OE on a scale of maybe 2X . The bulk of the rubber must be hidden from view when installed. Maybe the OE has severely shrunk over time as well. All the more reason to get on with the repair. I will attempt the replacement and report back with the blow by blow.

Hey, if you figure out how in the heck to replace that back seal, I sure would love to know how! Someone needs fingers the size of a 2 year old!

Just did the seal on Friday. All of the convoluted, barbed part (both top and bottom) of the seal fits in that narrow little channel. Only the flat outer edge is what you'll see when your're done. Take it from one who did it 1 mm. at a time and do it by the way in the CD manual. Remove the front deflector and attached arms and then loosen the screws underneath it to loosen the lower edge of the channel to give you some room to cram all of that "excess" in there. It really is an example of where it's easier "by the book".

jbaj007: This was the worst R&R I have done to date. What a miserable job. All seals are in but it took me the better part of a day to get the front seal in then I had jam problems with the side seals. the back seal was easy once the roof was out. The CD was necessary as you said but very skimpy on the details. If someone wants more info on how to do this let me know
