Engine Ticking

On idle a light haze of white smoke comes out, driving it down the road seems alright, but when it reaches 2000RPM there is a ticking noise and it doesn't go away at higher RPMs. I have a 300SD with a OM617.951

You might want to post a video of your engine running. That would help give us an idea of what the noise is like.

If you aren't loosing any coolant, my first guess would be an injector. However, before you tear into those, when was your last valve adjustment?

Ive had a similiar run-in with a rather inexpensive fixable remedy ,it turns out that the vacuum pump let go at its bearing , the ticking was the armature tapping on the metal ride that produces vacuum. The fix was too replace vacuum pump and find the 12 tiny bearings that dropped into the oil pan ,in my case I found 11.If you find the noise more promanent at the frt top of the motor this most likley is your culpriet.Oh yes ,and the vacuum pump still worked surprisingly .The unit if let alone would eventually wear the armature so bad that it would turn into shrapnel, then find its way into the timing chain so checking it soon would be advisable.

A good way not to strip those pesky hex bolts that hold the vacuum unit on to the block is to remove the power steering resorvoir ,this makes the job of removal so so much easier .Also,Youll want to clean the inside were the hex tool goes in with a bobbi pin or fine screw driver ,this so the tool seats down into the bolt completely .If it is the vac pump then when you install the next one be sure to follow the manual procedure and do a test fit to make sure you have the ride that the bearing rolls on at its lowest position ,this makes bolting back on a straight forward job .
