Need a motor for a W116 SD
We just picked up a beautifully clean and cosmetically fantastic 1980 300SD for a song. It is going to need a new motor though. I found a motor for my 1981 300TD a couple years ago that worked out fine.
Are there significant differences between the W123 sedan motors and the W116s?

AFAIK, the differences are mostly minor. The exhaust manifold doesn't have EGR on the W116, different vacuum routing and pump, maybe different sensors, but really most everything is similar enough otherwise or will swap over (like the throttle linkage). I don't think you should have any problems really.

Oil pans are different, throttle set up is different, intake set up is different
Best have two motors on two stands and take everything off the W116 and install on the W123 motor if that's the route you'll go.

I have two nice running motors out of 300D's if you need one, just send me an email. Even have some video of one of them running. One is out of an 84' other an 85.
