i'm in the market for a spring compressor for w123/w116 (not sure which one chassis share same diameter) springs. obviously not looking to break the bank and buy the one with the mercedes star on it.

curious what the best bang for your buck option that everyone else is using is.

thanks!

There is a ton of the after market compressors out there.
They use to run in the $200 range, now I see the price has really dropped.

mercedes spring compressor | eBay

I see one there for $63...yikes. I picked up one off CL about 6 yrs ago for $75 new never used. Thought it was a killer deal.

Then found one for a friend this summer off CL for $40.

Yeah if the MB Star is important, then dig a little deeper, something like $1200.

These should work on the w116,W123/W126 and maybe a couple others and maybe BMW.

^ Make sure you sort those by lowest price including shipping. Some look like a good deal until you see the shipping...

I used one of those myself though, awhile back. It worked great and took the beating I had to give it. Other than having to make the hole on the car ever so slightly bigger it went pretty smooth otherwise.

I recently purchased one of those $75 ("free" shipping) kits off eBarf, like charmalu linked to, for working on the W210's suspension. The description stated that it was good for the W210 front axle but it worked fine for the rear springs too, with a bit of fiddling. W123 and W116 are also listed in the applications.

Looks like the cheaper priced one`s are free shipping, the pricier ones are $20 - $30.
There is probably not a nickle worth of difference between them all.

I agree, with the W123 the hole the shaft will have to be opened up a bit.
Be sure to seal off the bare steel after words.
I used my Air Die Grinder with a set of Rasp Bits I bought from HF. Just did the 240.

The REAR springs on the W123 and 126, you really don`t need the compressor. Once the Shocks are removed, Links and one or 2 other things.
Lower the Diff/Trailing Arm assy. and the springs will fall out.

I was dropping a Diff from a 126 at PNP, when I lowered the TA Assy. the springs fell out, scared the crap out of me.
Then noticed someone had removed the Shocks.

With the fronts springs, then ya, definately use the Compressor. Those are under a lot of pressure.

And DO Not use an Air Gun to compress the Compressor Shaft. Tighten it by hand.
