Question What about this one?

I have a friend who is selling his Neon, and after seeing me purchase 2 MB Diesels in the last 4 months is very interested in replaceing his Neon for a 300d-t (or even 240 if manual tranny).

I found this one on EBay, and being still relatively new, would like any and all opinions on this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1829579265

I know it is close (2 days) to the end of the auction, but I would appreciate any thoughts. Here are some questions I gave my friend to ask the owner:
1. how much oil is consumed within 3000 miles?
2. been in any accidents?
3. how does the tranny shift?
4. does it start hard? (compression?)
5. underbody or floorboard rust?

Says in last paragraph that his "asking price" is $3950.
I can't see it going a dime over $3000...if that. Does this sound right?

I am not sure the owner knows a ton about this vehicle either..."6 cylinder"?? "Leather seats"??

Thanks in advance!

I'd ask about the front ball joints and control arm bushings. If they haven't been replaced they probably need to be. Some other things like steering arms, drag link, idler arm bushings and rear subframe mounts are a little easier for a DIYer to fix. Good luck!

See if the climate controls work properly...if not, that can be a high-$$$$ repair, so adjust your bid accordingly.

I agree with DieselD, not a dime over $3000. I only spent $5k on my 300sdl.

$$$

Well, it is now at $3600 with a day and a half left.
This one is out of my friends range.

I can understand an sdl for $5k, but an '83 300d-t?
Just my 2 cents, but I have been noticing that there a lot of 300dt's on ebay and autotrader that have either not met reserve or sold for a lot less than $4k.

That would be a fair price if ALL was PERFECT! Too many question marks (A/C, ...). With some effort you can find the equivalent or better for less $. Check www.abracat.com and other classifieds aggregators. Good luck, and of course your efforts to convert the lowly neon man to the proud ranks of the MBz diesel driver is respected and supported.

mccan,
Thanks for the encouragement!

My friend may be selling his Neon this afternoon, and is in need of a replacement soon. I caution him not to be hasty and "settle" for something. He DEFINATELY wants a MB.

Anyone out there know of any 'good' 1982-1985 300d-t or 240D (manual tranny on the 240 please!)??

I have a local guy selling a 1980 300TD w/ 185K miles. Probably the most well kept 617 I've seen. But it's here in NJ. Quite a haul to MI.

yeah...

Thanks, but my friend (hopefully 'soon-to-be-forum-member') wants a day drive trip, but if he has to go further, he wants to head more south...

I have a friend selling a couple of nice 300D cars here in Atlanta...I think at least one of them has always been a southern car (little or no rust!), so if you're interested, send me an e-mail.
