Bravo.
Exactly.....foolishness.

The issue I understand has not been decided yet in Canada. Dealers may be hurt worse here. As the percentage of diesel sales may have been higher here.

If GM produces a diesel cruise there may be no release in north America. At least several automotive companies have prior announced they would launch their diesel cars here but never have. What is almost certain is the diesel engines are becoming very complex.

What I do know for certain and it has been for a long time. If I as a Canadian wanted to move to America. I was not allowed to take my Volkswagon diesel car with me. Newish or older. The American government would not let them in.

I always thought that strange as they were the same vehicle. This has been in effect for at least 15 years. What it does indicate to me is there has been some form of prior issues between the American government and the Volkswagon company.

Unless Volkswagon comes up with some form of miracle. I think we will see a major loss of dealerships in Canada. Many dealers here are trying to push Audi products currently to compensate. But they are not really popular here.

The only repair a customer should accept on their current diesel vehicles if they want it done. Is a downstream form of emission treatments. Otherwise you will have engine trouble I suspect from carbon buildup. That is the specific reason Volkswagon did what they did.

My wife still likes their product so we priced their gas car not long ago. I felt it was overpriced.

Yep, even if the engines were twice as dirty per unit of fuel used, they are still using 1/3 the fuel and hence are cleaner on a per mile basis. Typical American big government regulation. We need to "drain the swamp"!

From what I could find, the engines are made in Szentgotthárd, Hungary at the Opel engine plant. They have aluminum heads, blocks and bedplates, but I have read nothing about no cylinder liners or production being moved to Thailand. Source?

VWs cheat mode TDIs were caught emitting 40x the legal NOx limit for diesels which is itself much higher than for gasoline engines. These people shouldn't be allowed to sell anything in the US.

I wouldn't worry a thing about the availability of VW parts anytime soon.

Tom, are you getting the $5K, or whatever amount for your car too from VW? Even if you keep it?
