Replaced my driveshaft carrier mount and bushing UGH
Hi folks,
figured I'd replace my driving shaft carrier mount and bearing today as it was quite worn. Everything came out okay and seemed to go back together okay. I marked the drive shaft before taking it out of the car (only needed to remove the rear section) and put it back in what I thought was the correct order. Now I have a nasty vibration from 40 mph + Can having the drive shaft mis-aligned by one notch really cause a vibration or should I have left the mount loose and moved the car around and re-tightened it. thoughts? |

What car do you have?
Not sure when they started to mark the driveshafts but some will have the raised marks shown in the photo Jeff

Are you able to safely view the prop while running, the carrier does have some degree of movement with bolts loose.

removed and re-installed everything today. Heres a stumper:
my propshaft has alignment marks from the factory. I installed it with these marks aligned an the vibration was MUCH worse, basically unbearable. Re-installed with the marks I made on it before initial disassembly and now I just have a mild vibration from 45-60 mph depending on throttle position. I check the propshaft and it doesn't look like any of the weights fell off while I was working on it. I'm planning on installing the new front flex disc ( only removed the rear section) and a new carrier bushing this weekend. In addition to the vibration I think the new bearing is making a groaning/ howling noise. |

What did the drivehaft centering bearings look like? You have one on each and of the drive shaft you find them in the center of the flex disc.
Same with the Flex Discs. Did your U-joint still flex OK?

The balance marks on the prop shafts were not taken into consideration until August 1982.
That means on a car made before that date the factory marks are useless and you'll have to rely on the marks that you made. Before you crank down on everything, you're supposed to put the wheels down on the ground and roll the car back and forth a bit so that everything can settle, than tighten everything down. Have you tried that?
