Basket, right?

I don't know, but you managed to create a very optically illusory picture. I can't tell if it's sticking out or sticking in. Meanwhile, it appears to be floating in midair near a brick wall.

The new blue/black dress? :D

Sort of both. That's the "retainer basket" from the timing device on an OM60x engine. They were originally installed when they left the factory, but not required to be left in the engine. They're used to hold the timing device in place when the injection pump is removed.

Hang onto it if you have the car it goes to, it'll come in handy if you ever have to pull the IP.

LOL! I see what you're saying. 🙄 Hopefully this pic will be better.

Obligatory "looks 'shopped to me". That is a crazy picture.

Sometimes I amaze myself. 🙄😂😂😂
I've removed the VP on several OM60x engines and have NEVER seen one of these installed. You bet your tater tots I'm keeping this thing. I just removed the VP off of a $300 1987 190D 2.5 Turbo and thought someone had left a tool in there. I was sure it was the "timing basket" but never knew it came from the factory that way. Interesting.

The seem to have left them in the 190DT's, mine had it too. If you're installing a newer Pierburg VP with the "dammed" gasket, it has to be removed.

Looks like a parts car now...

I was gonna revive the old gal but #1 cylinder is low on compression. Once I got the head removed, I could see severe scarring in the liner. The trans is shot also. I gave $300 for it. Someone ran veggie oil in it. It has the whole veggie system still in it too! It's a very solid car, but I don't think I'm gonna invest any money in it. It has enough parts on it to keep my '93 300D running for some time to come, not to mention I have a '92 300D parts car too. I plan to drive the '93 for a looooooooooong time.

What's the condition of everything else?

Zulfiqar 12-07-2016 12:49 PM

This tool jumped price from being 15 dollars to being 300 dollars now.

I found one in a junkyard car, its on my parts shelf now, the yard checkout clerk didnt even charge for it. :D

I pulled an injection pump from a 190D 2.5 and brought that part with it. That plus the injectors and hardlines, every single relay and the air filter housing and various other impossible to find engine bits for my 190D came out to about $100. One of my favorite yard finds ever.
