The link to Interstate battery is the one Interstate lists a direct replacement.
I didn't place them side by side to see, just took it Interstate knew what it needed.

If the battery is smaller and cannot be locked down, I'd think you'd have a case as far as returning it for a battery that can be locked down? The link you provided calls it "Mega-Tron Plus 49/H8 Automotive Battery Six-Year Performance 730 CCA"

Maybe it should be called "minus" instead of "plus"?

I'll go see Interstate next week and tell them it is shorter and won't lock down. The battery was picked out of the official Interstate catalogue by the station owner who is an old friend of mine. Catalogue type listed for a 10/1999 W220 S500.

Will see what transpires.

Interstate Spec:
Product ID: mtp-49/h8
Cranking Amps: 910
Cold Cranking Amps: 730
Voltage: 12
Termination: Common Code A
Weight (lbs): 50
Width (in): 6.89
Length (in): 13.94
Height (in): 7.50
CAP-20: 100.00
ReserveCapacity-25: 175.00
WET/DRY: W

BTW...Maybe he said 72 months warranty an' I heard 7 years, as I had just asked him how many years warranty. D'oh!

This one Car and Truck Automotive Batteries - Buy a Vehicle Battery for Cars or Trucks | Interstate Batteries - MT5 AGM 30-months Free is a little wider but not 1" wider. Maybe it will fit better? It is also heavier, with higher CCA, longer warranty but more $

(from Barry 12345) We used to buy Johnson control group 49 batteries made in the USA for 99.00. Decent quality. Then they moved production to Mexico.
In the Midwest, Johnson Controls still make them in Geneva, IL.

I try to get the Econo Power batteries from Interstate whenever possible. They're starting to push the price up - last one was $75. Local farm store (RK) sells private label Exide's 49s & H8s for $60-$70 on sale w/5yr warranty.

For AGMs I use Deka. Not cheap, but very good service life when used in properly equipped motor homes. I used to install FLA 6 volt deep cycle units (aka golf cart) but a couple of my clients stated that their insurance company required AGMs now (don't know if its true) in motor coaches.

Any discussion about pricing being better years ago needs to include running the $ and year this https://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm

That $ 99 battery in 2010 in today's money is $109.58 . I realize that is less than the current $179 but we don't know if the $ 99 was on sale / under market. Metals prices go up and down constantly sometimes going very low and very high.

As for recovering a discharged battery, a fully charged lead acid battery is 12.66 V, Full discharge is 11.70 V . It is possible to drive a battery to 0 V and recover from it however, each deep discharge takes life off the battery.

In generic terms, as a battery discharges sulfur is absorbed into the lead. If the battery is left in this state a "crust" builds up on the plates preventing the sulfur from being forced back into the water. This is called sulfation.

There are a few other failure modes:

Lead flaking off the plate grids reduces capacity. ( think of a gas tank having a hole 3/4 of the way down. ) There is no way to recover from this.

A shorted cell, this is where two plates touch and take the cell out of the string. This gives you a 10 V battery with the same capacity as a 12V battery.

Internal connection failure. This is a usually sudden loss of power, it acts like a dirty battery terminal. I've had a couple of batteries explode during cranking and suspect it was due to a failed internal connection arcing lighting off hydrogen.

LOL, full discharge is 11.70v... I had one recently that was 8v and one that was 0v, both unchargeable with every trick in the book. Deader than dead.

I'll probably go Interstate again, those are hard to kill. I've had two O'Reilly Super Starts, one leaks like a sieve but still works great, the other needed constant charging from new and is the 8v one. I had an Optima and that failed after a year (heard they really sucked for a few years there and may have improved more recently but I'm gun shy now).

I was surprised too. But believe me, voltage was zero. I could barely discern needle movement when I attached analog meter on 2.5V scale.

As posted in another thread, it took old Sears charger to get any charge back before switching to modern charger. Battery still working!

About a week ago I ran the Walmart battery in my old truck down to 0. The volt meter did not even twitch. In VA the law says that lights have to be on during the day if your wipers are on. My idiot buzzer apparently failed to alert me that the lights were left on. The battery is only about a year old, and it charged up fine. I've been using it most days and it seems fine, although I expect a shortened life.

I love Interstates.

However, when my CDI needed a new battery, I shopped Interstate and found their AGM astronomical in price. I checked Sears website out, and saved a ton of $ going with a Die Hard.

***Tip: Buy the Sears DieHard online with credit card, before going to the Sears Automotive Center to pick it up. You get an authorization number to give the clerk @ Sears, and you save about $35.00 below in-store price. Or, at the time I bought it, it was that much more $ off.

Wow that is super cheap! That is a full one hundred dollars less than I just paid for a Group 49 w 5 yr warranty! I wish deals like that were available locally.

As I mentioned in the first post, stay away from auto parts stores if you want good battery prices. Walmart has good everyday prices but they only carry high volume sizes. I often convert my cars hold downs to size 24 which is always available. Fair sized cities often have battery outlets that industrial users know about, so check the yellow pages. 49s are not a high volume size so Walmart will not likely have it, and the outlet might need days to get it in. That is why I paid top dollar for my wife's battery. When her battery dies, it is an emergency, and she wants a new one NOW.
