Moderates the severe pulses created in the injection pump. Also it is thought to reduce noise.
Looks like the vast majority of these cars run well if it is not present. Only one case that I am aware of that it made a difference in running. I suspect it was in combination with perhaps another issue present but no attempt was made to locate it. This also may have not been the case. Anyways putting the cigar hose back in did cure the issue. The car ran differently depending on the level of fuel in the tank without the hose. Remember this was the only case I ever remember. |

I love reading the post titles and formulating a mental response before clicking on the post...
In this case it was - cigar "Thanks, don't mind if I do"

If you wrap your hand around the cigar while it's idling, you can feel it's alive! I was told the cigar hose prevents potential fatigue of the under the car metal fuel return to tank line from the strong pulses.

After reading through these in an effort to learn whether I should put a cigar hose in my 39 Studie with 617 I decided that most likely since the builder put rubber hose all the way to the tank that will take care of the need to soften impulses in the fuel line....agreed?

Well the 60x engines use a mechanical lift pump similar to the 61x (different design, but same implementation) and they don't have a "cigar" hose and do have the steel lines under the vehicle. Other manufacturers don't use it either, so I'd assume it's safe to delete.

On the other hand, it'll be an interesting conversation piece at the show-n-shine. Dress it in a braided steel sheath!

Only problem is I fabricated it about an inch too short, so I have to remove the hose to remove the oil filter housing cover...dohhh

Yes but with the cigar hose flare. Snake skin sheathing will make it really interesting
Maybe you can do something with a 603.960 or 603.971 oil filter cover that's separate from the center tube. The tube is removed first, then the cover. Sixto 83 300SD 98 E320 wagon |
