This weekend @ Cars and Coffee & Super Car Sunday

Sorry for the short notice, but Blue really needs to use his TD, so the celebration is planned for this Saturday and Sunday.

Coffee and Cars with Pelican:
Saturday, May 20th 7am-9am
550 Deep Valley Drive
Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA 90274-3612

Sunday, May 21st- 7am-10am
Super Car Sunday
Westfield Promenade
6100 Topanga Canyon Blvd.
Woodland Hills, CA 91367

20 years ago, here in Los Angeles, Blue Nelson started shuttling vintage VW parts to swap meets in his 1982 Mercedes 300TD. In an age where we covet and highly prize the low-mile, classic car, his wagon has a different story. This week the trusted Diesel will roll over 500,000 miles of which he drove 400,000+ miles of it. True, many a modern car surpasses this benchmark and even the occasional classic car as well, but what make this effort so unique is the variety in which the wagon has been used….. as a daily commuter, limo, parts and engine hauler, shaggin wagon, camping car, Bonneville push car, Death Valley exploring car, camera platform and insert film car, vintage motorcycle hauler, apartment mover, picture car, just-drive-to-Key-West-to-sit-in-Ernest-Hemmingway's-seat-at-return-to-California-car, and his favorite a Mercedes tow car. By tow car, he has logged 100,000 miles flat-bar towing only Mercedes Benzes, mostly W123s; and in fact, probably some of the cars belonging to very people reading this. The hope is that the odometer will roll over 500K (its at 499,801 now) miles either at the Pelican Parts cars/coffee in Palos Verdes Peninsula or the following day at Super Car Sunday on Topanga Cyn. Just look for the Dark Blue turbo diesel wagon with his hand made custom wood roof rack and signature hub caps with white walls, and peer inside to check out the odometer, and imagine cruising your own classic car this far. How far is 500K miles? Wake up every day... drive to Las Vegas…. without a single day off…. for 4 and a half years. Oh and expect a half a million smiles from the owner too.

' Kraft Durch Freude ' ~ there's a LOT of joy in driving a Mercedes 300TD ! .

More so when you're adventurous .

I'd hoped to bring my clean and tidy Grey Market 300TD to this event .

' Flat Towing ' normally means you get a rigid tow bar and bolt it to the towed vehicle like shown in the photos ~ it's critical to _always_ check the tranny fluid and final drive gear oil plus the tire pressures as having something let go or seize up when you're blowing and going far from home is always exciting and never any fun .

I to have flat towed many vehicles across America , take it easy and pay attention to the details, you should be fine as long as no black ice .

Id be there as well if it wasn't on the wrong coast

As for the tow bar setup I dont see any pics of it for reference that offer any insight. Just a portion of the car being towed and the td in front.

A great time was had by all!

Blue rolled in a little after 7am with 500,000 miles on the odometer of his TD. A gentleman from the Classic Center was on hand with the necessary paperwork and verification to issue the 750,000 KM High Mileage badge! (It will be mailed in a few weeks). There were probably at least 500 cars there, including a large gathering of members of the local Three Point Social Club. There were mostly Porsche cars. The coolest in my opinion was the LS powered one. We celebrated with a cake and drinks. We will do it all again tomorrow morning (Sunday) at Super Car Sunday in Woodland Hills.
